Matildas Abroad Review: Foord scores brace against Spurs in North London Derby

Caitlin Foord bagged a brace for Arsenal in their 5-1 win over Spurs; while the season kicked off in the USA, Sweden and Norway.

England

Kicking off with the Merseyside derby, Clare Wheeler's Everton recorded a 1-1 draw with rivals, Liverpool, with Wheeler picking up an assist in the game. 

The Toffees opened the scoring in the encounter, Wheeler's pass found Gabrielle George who found the back of the net with a long-range shot from a difficult angle.

Katie Stengel found the equaliser for Liverpool right before the break, with the Reds' top scorer for the season splitting the defence to finish from close range.

Both sides had goals chalked off in the second half, Liverpool for a foul on the keeper in the build-up, while Everton's Jess Park had her goal disallowed after a handball. 

Another derby saw Kyah Simon's Tottenham Hotspur go down 5-1 to Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley's Arsenal in the North London derby, with Foord scoring her 3rd brace against Spurs. 

The Gunners opened the scoring just five minutes into the game through Stina Blackstenius, with Leah Williamson sending through a perfect pass to find the striker.

Foord doubled the advantage just before the half-hour mark, finishing off a brilliant solo run past the Spurs' keeper. 

Spurs clawed a goal back through Bethany England from the penalty spot, after a handball in the box to send Arsenal into the break 2-1 up.

Arsenal had a penalty of their own early in the second half to restore the two-goal lead, with skipper Kim Little firing her shot into the roof of the net. 

Foord got her second of the game, controlling a cross from Victoria Pelova at the back post, and finding the back of the net for the second time in the game.

Frida Maanum added Arsenal's 5th of the day, helping her side move to 3rd on the table. Foord was named Player of the Match in the win. 

Meanwhile, Manchester United showed a dominant display against Mackenzie Arnold's West Ham United, beating the Hammers 4-0 to move back into first place.

Manchester opened the scoring early in the second half from the penalty spot, with Katie Zelem finding the back of the net.

A brace to Lucía García and a late goal for Hayley Ladd saw Manchester win 4-0. 

Next up, Mary Fowler, Hayley Raso and Alanna Kennedy's Manchester City beat Sam Kerr's Chelsea 2-0, with City doing a favour for their rivals Manchester United helping them hang on to the top of the table.

The hosts broke the deadlock midway through the first half in spectacular fashion, Flippa Angeldahl picked up a poor goal kick from Ann-Katrin Berger and lofted her shot in from just outside the box.

City doubled their advantage just nine minutes later through Lauren Hemp. Emma Hayes' opted for two substitutes 35 minutes into the game, not happy with her side's efforts.

Chelsea was unable to claw back a goal in the fixture, Kerr played the whole game while City's Aussie trio remained on the bench in the victory. 

Emily Gielnik's Aston Villa recorded a 5-0 win over Courtney Nevin and Remy Siemsen's Leicester City, with Villa making it four games undefeated in the competition. 

Braces to Alisha Lehmann, and Rachel Daly and a goal to Kenza Dali gave Aston Villa all three points, with Nevin playing the whole game and Siemsen coming off the bench for the Foxes. 

Lastly, Lydia Williams' Brighton & Hove Albion clinched a crucial point with a 2-2 draw against Reading FC. 

An early brace to Veatriki Sarri saw the Seagulls take a 2-0 lead going into the break. A brace from Emma Harries in the second half saw Reading claw back the deficit, with both sides taking a much-needed point as they battle to get out of the relegation zone. 

Lydia Williams played the full game in goals for Brighton. 

USA

The eleventh season of the NWSL started in the USA, with Emily Van Egmond's San Diego Wave FC hosting the Chicago Red Stars in last season's quarter-final rematch. 

Van Egmond made the start for Casey Stoney's side, alongside former Red Stars midfielder Danielle Colaprico. Quick goals to Yūki Nagasato and Amirah Ali saw the sides locked at 1-1 after the 22nd minute.


San Diego looked to take the lead going into the break after Jaedyn Shaw found the back of the net, Chicago was unable to clear a Wave corner, which Shaw was able to finish from the top of the box. 

A spot kick from Mallory Swanson tied things up once again in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time. Wave skipper Alex Morgan found the go-ahead goal for the home side in the 89th minute, winning a penalty and dispatching from the spot.

Van Egmond played the entire game for Wave in front of 30,000-plus fans at Snapdragon Stadium. 

Meanwhile, Alex Chidiac's Racing Louisville travelled to Texas for their opening game, recording a 0-0 draw against Houston Dash to start their season. 

Chidiac came off the bench in the 73rd minute for Racing but was unable to help her side find the matchwinner. 

Sweden

Meanwhile, in Sweden, the OBOS Damallsvenskan season started. Last season's champions Teagan Micah's FC Rosengård held on for a 1-1 draw against Piteå IF in their opening game of the season.

Loreta Kullashi opened the scoring for Rosengård just after the break, and Hanna Andersson found the back of the net for Piteå in the 85th minute to seal the draw. Micah did not appear in the matchday squad. 

Next up, Aivi Luik's BK Häcken faced a 1-0 defeat to Djurgårdens IF in their opening game, with the Wasps falling behind just 16 minutes into the game. Luik came off the bench in the 83rd minute for the hosts. 

Meanwhile, Kyra Cooney-Cross' Hammarby recorded a 2-0 win over Clare Polkinghorne, Katrina Gorry and Charli Grant's Vittsjö GIK.

All four Aussies made the start for their respective sides, with Hammarby scoring twice in the second half to take away all three points with Cooney-Cross named Hammarby's Player of the Match in the victory. 

France

In France, Ellie Carpenter's Lyon maintained their lead at the top of the table with a dominant 6-0 win over ninth-placed Guingamp.

A brace to Signe Bruun and a goal to Vicki Becho saw Lyon take a 3-0 lead going into the break. Ada Hegerberg, Eugénie Le Sommer and Daniëlle van de Donk added their names to the scoresheet in the second half to finish the 6-0 show. 


Sonia Bompastor opted to rest Ellie Carpenter, Sara Däbritz and Delphine Cascarino ahead of their trip to London for their UWCL quarter-final must-win against Chelsea throughout the week. 

Norway

Lastly, Tameka Yallop's SK Brann began their title defence in the Toppserien with a 2-1 win over Lyn Fotball.

Brann came from behind to record their first three points of the season, with goals from Alyssa Walker and Nora Eide Lie for the away side.

Yallop played the whole game for Brann, making her Toppserien return for the side after returning from injury during their pre-season preparations.
