Our History against our October opponent: Haiti

The CommBank Matildas are set to take on Haiti for just the second time in our history during the upcoming October FIFA Women’s International Window as the team prepares for next year's FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™.

Let’s wind back to our previous encounter in 2012.

The two sides only meeting came back, in 2012, when Australia took on the Caribbean nation in Indianapolis, claiming a 4-0 victory during a three-game tour of the United States. 

Australia's side on the day was a familiar one, with Emily van Egmond, Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, Michelle Heyman, Alanna Kennedy, Emily Gielnik and Kyah Simon all featuring in the win, while Mackenzie Arnold was on the bench.

Goals from Ashley Brown, Kate Gill, Kyah Simon and Michelle Heyman sealed the victory over Haiti.

What to expect from this upcoming game

Since the last meeting, Haiti has made history qualifying for their first-ever FIFA Women's World Cup™ during the 2023 edition of the tournament. The team, coached by former USA, Sweden, Brazil and Switzerland coach, Pia Sundhage, brings a wealth of experience to the helm of the team and will no doubt be an asset as the team looks to qualify for back-to-back FIFA Women's World Cups™. 

The team has remained undefeated throughout their 2026 CONCACAF W Championship qualification campaign, with big wins over Belize and Anguilla. Haiti also recorded a 2-1 win over New Zealand during the June FIFA International Window.

Haiti will be taking on Japan and Australia during the October FIFA International Window, which will provide a valuable test as the team prepares to continue their FIFA Women's World Cup™ qualifying campaign in November. They will face Mexico in the quarter-finals of qualification; and should they overcome El Tri, they will seal their spot in Brazil next year.

Haitian players to watch out for are Lyon's Melchie Dumornay, who just this week was nominated for the Ballon d'Or, and has claimed back-to-back CONCACAF Women's Player of the Year awards.
