The CommBank Matildas will host Mexico on home soil, welcoming the El Tri Femenil back to Australian soil for the first time since 2006.

Current FIFA Ranking: 27

Head-to-head record: 10P-9W-0D-1L

The squad

Head coach Pedro López confirmed his 24-player squad earlier this week, with a mix of experienced players and some youngsters. As the side prepares for their upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup™ 2027 qualifying campaign in November, the side attempts to book their spot in the tournament for the first time since 2015.

C.F. Pachuca's Esthefanny Barreras is the most experienced goalkeeper in the squad, with 30 appearances for her country since making her debut in 2016, and is joined in the squad by C.D. Guadalajara's Blanca Félix, with 3 appearances and Club América's Itzel Velasco, with 2 caps for her national team.

Over to the defenders, Kenti Robles is the most experienced player in the squad, coming over, having made 125 appearances for her national team since her debut back in 2010. Mackenzie Arnold's Portland Thorns teammate, Reyna Reyes, will also make the trip to Australia for the upcoming two-match series, and, alongside Arnold, has been an integral part of the Thorns' successful start to the NWSL season.

Scarlett Camberos is one notable exclusion from the Mexican side, with the forward not named in the squad, fresh off captaining Club América to the 2025–26 CONCACAF W Champions Cup title.

Mexico's second-highest goalscorer for the women's national team, C.F. Pachuca's Charlyn Corral, will be hoping this two-match series can see her continue her goalscoring form for her national team, having scored 6 goals for Mexico in 2026 so far during the 2026 CONCACAF W Championship qualification.

Nina Nicosia receives her first call-up for the Mexican Women's National team, having previously represented Argentina at the junior and senior level, but makes the switch to the El Tri Femenil.

Goalkeepers: Esthefanny Barreras, Blanca Félix & Itzel Velasco
Defenders: Kimberly Rodríguez, Nicolette Hernández, Aaliyah Farmer, Ivonne Gutiérrez, Kenti Robles, Reyna Reyes, Karol Bernal & Greta Espinoza
Midfielders: Rebecca Bernal, Nancy Antonio, Karla Nieto, Fátima Servín, Alexia Delgado & Alice Soto
Forwards: Montserrat Saldívar, Jasmine Casarez, Charlyn Corral, Diana Ordóñez, Kiana Palacios, María Sánchez & Nina Nicosia

Head Coach

Pedro López is the head coach of the side, having been appointed back in 2022, helping Mexico to the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games and the 2023 Pan American Games title.

López previously coached youth teams for his home nation, Spain, leading the U20 Women's side to the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup title in 2022, a tournament they took on Australia in, and also as runners-up in the 2018 edition of the tournament.

The Spaniard will be aiming to help Mexico's senior women's national team qualify for next year's FIFA Women’s World Cup™ 2027 for the first time since 2015, with 4 direct slots up for grabs and two slots for the CONCACAF representatives in the inter-confederation play-offs.

Mexico take on Haiti in the quarter-finals, and if they progress through to the semi-finals, will seal one of the four CONCACAF spots in next year's tournament.

Previous Meeting

Australia and Mexico last faced off on 9 April 2024 in a one-off friendly match in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The CommBank Matildas were 2-0 victors that day thanks to goals from Hayley Raso and Caitlin Foord.

Recent Form

Mexico have been on a fantastic run coming into the two-match series, having breezed through their 2026 CONCACAF W Championship Qualifying campaign, beating Saint Lucia 7-0, U.S. Virgin Islands 9-0 and booking their spot in the 2026 CONCACAF W Championship with a 6-0 victory over Puerto Rico.

They hosted Brazil in a one-off friendly in Mexico in March, with a 76th-minute goal to Greta Espinoza seeing Mexico seal a 1-0 win over Brazil. Last year's games saw them remain undefeated throughout their 8 games, beating New Zealand twice on Mexican soil and defeating Colombia 1-0.
