Micah: There’s a lot of excitement around the group

CommBank Matildas goalkeeper Teagan Micah said that excitement is building within camp as the AFC Asian Cup 2026™ on home soil draws ever closer.

She was speaking to media ahead of Australia’s upcoming friendlies against Wales and England during the October international window.

“This is a first time in a long time where we've had very strong, competitive group within the squad,” she expressed.

“There’s a lot of excitement there. “Yes, [there’s] a sense of urgency, but with European football - I know the Asian Cup is in February - it does feel like quite some time away between then and now. We still have a lot of games to get through.”

It is still early days in the camp, but she is optimistic as the team continues to prepare for the next six months.

“So far, so good,” she said of the camp.

“We just had one training yesterday with the girls that were available, and we still have some people coming into camp. I think they arrived last night. So for us, it's important to get out on the pitch together.

“There are only essentially two camps left before the Asian Cup. So we're trying to relish in these times and take each moment as it comes.

“The games are very important this window, and then next window as well. With only two camps leading up, we're just trying to kind of soak in everything Pepe [Joe Montemurro] is going to say and put towards us tactic-wise, and hopefully put our best foot forward.”

Micah made the move to club side Lyon in the offseason to help improve her game and continue to compete for the starting goalkeeper role within the CommBank Matildas.

She said that she was enjoying her time there, particularly learning alongside veteran Chilean goalkeeper Christiane Endler.

“I’m really, really enjoying Lyon,” she said.

“For club land, [it is] the highest possible environment I could put myself in. I'm really enjoying it - the training, the coaching, everything that I'm getting there, the players that I'm surrounded by every day.

“Of course, Chris [Endler] is a world-class keeper. I knew that going into it, and what my role would be. I'm really enjoying learning off her.”

While she is not starting every week for Lyon, it is this experience that she is hoping will push her career forward on the international stage.

“[Starting for the CommBank Matildas] is obviously my main goal, and I wouldn't make any move that I didn't think would benefit my career,” she explained.

“I take one game at a time. [Club and country] are two separate environments, and I hope that they can bounce off each other, and help myself in the long run.

“We have a very competitive goalkeeping union - that's always been the case.”

She ended by giving some insights into how the team will approach their upcoming opponents, Wales and England.

“They're both quality teams,” she said.

“Obviously, Wales had their first Euros campaign last summer, and England won the Euros. So they're both very, very good teams. They both bring different qualities that we'll have to look to break down.

“We’ll probably be focusing a bit more on our own game and how we can start to develop that under Pepe [Montemurro], and then hopefully we can get a win for both games. That would be great.”
