It was always going to be an arm wrestle between the two most successful teams in competition history – Melbourne City and Sydney FC – and so it proved on Saturday, a lone goal from Shea Connors separating the sides as Sydney claimed the 1-0 victory.

Melbourne City controlled possession and the pace of the game, but found it difficult to create clear-cut chances. Sydney’s midfield block was organised to blunt the strengths of City’s game and it was a success. For the majority of the 90 minutes, City struggled to play the ball through the middle.

Daniela Galic looked the most dangerous of City’s players and had the game swung the other way, was a good chance of being named best on the ground. When she got the ball at her feet she was a constant danger and created several opportunities on her own.

However, it was her CommBank Young Matildas teammate Indiana Dos Santos who would create a moment of magic for Sydney FC to capitalise. A through ball by Dos Santos provided the assist for Shea Connors’ goal, played perfectly into the path of the substitute who made no mistake one-on-one with the keeper.

Cortnee Vine was a constant threat on the flanks for Sydney but was closed down well by City’s defence. Jada Whyman will be pleased with yet another clean sheet this season in what was ultimately an incredibly secure defensive performance from Sydney.

In the end, it was a performance that showed this Sydney FC team's big game experience, and they walked away from the season with a trophy on the biggest stage to show for it.
