Matildas at Home Review: McNamara assists as City continue charge up table

Holly McNamara continues to be at the centre of Melbourne City's rise up the table, assisting the lone goal in City's 1-0 victory over Sydney FC on the weekend.

Elsewhere, Canberra United and Brisbane Roar secured draws while Perth Glory's home form continues to deliver the goods.

Read our review of the action below:

Western Sydney Wanderers 1 – 1 Canberra United

The Western Sydney Wanderers came from behind to earn a good point against league leaders Canberra United on Saturday.

Canberra’s Liz Anton opened the scoring from a corner in the first half. The Wanderers worked their way into the game, however, and a first competition goal for Milly Bennett in the second half drew things level.

Michelle Heyman started and played the full game for Canberra, while Chloe Logarzo-Berryhill started for the Wanderers, playing 60 minutes.

Brisbane Roar 2 – 2 Wellington Phoenix

The Wellington Phoenix scored a dramatic late equaliser to secure their first-ever competition point in Brisbane,

Manaia Elliott scored first for the Phoenix before Ashlyn Miller and youngster Ava Piazza – with a stunning long-range strike – gave Brisbane the lead. They doggedly defended that lead until the 98th minute, when Brooke Nunn’s looping effort found a way to nestle into the back of the net and earn a point for the ‘Nix.

Chloe Lincoln and Sharn Freier both started for the Roar, while Grace Kuilamu and Tameka Yallop were unavailable due to injury.

Perth Glory 1 – 0 Newcastle Jets

Perth Glory returned to winning ways at home, overcoming the Newcastle Jets 1-0.

Izzy Dalton was the goalscorer for the Glory early in the first half and gave them a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. The result means that the Glory finish the round in fifth, having not conceded a goal at home for three games.

Natasha Prior started and played the full match for the Jets.

Adelaide United 1 – 0 Central Coast Mariners

The Reds took their revenge for their round one defeat to the Mariners, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory at home.

Despite the Mariners feeling like they had the better of the first half, it was Emily Condon’s goal just after half-time that was the difference between the two teams. Consecutive wins for the Reds put them into eighth on the ladder, but only two points away from the top six.

Isabel Gomez started for the Mariners while Adriana Taranto did the same for the successful Reds.

Melbourne City 1 – 0 Sydney FC

It was a valiant effort from Sydney FC – although ultimately in vain – as Melbourne City ran out 1-0 victors.

Chinaza Uchendu scored her first in the competition early in the second half as a reward for City’s consistent pressure. Sydney had chances of their own but were unable to find a way past City goalkeeper Malena Mieres.

Holly McNamara started for City and assisted the goal. Alexia Apostolakis also started, while Karly Roestbakken and Bryleeh Henry came off the bench. It was Henry’s first appearance of the season after returning from a back injury.
