Asian Women’s Champions League

Melbourne City 7 – 0 Stallion Laguna

Melbourne City were dominant over the Philippines side Stallion Laguna, walking away 7-0 victors.

Holly McNamara played a part in setting up a goal for Aideen Keane early, before Leah Davidson scored her first in City blue minutes later. McNamara was substituted out before half-time as a precaution – City have stated there are no injury concerns - but that didn’t stop the goals, with Leticia McKenna picking up a brace to make it 4-0 at half-time.

Danella Butrus added to her AWCL tally while Kiwi international Deven Jackson scored her first two goals for City to make it seven.

McNamara, Davidson, and Alexia Apostolakis all started for City, with Karly Roestbakken coming off the bench at half-time. Bryleeh Henry was an unused substitute.

A-League Women

Adelaide United 2 – 1 Canberra United

Adelaide United picked up their first win of the A-League Women's season, coming from behind to overrun Canberra United 2-1.

Kiara de Domizio scored her first goal for Canberra, teed up by Michelle Heyman, to give the visitors the lead within seconds of kickoff. The Reds built into the game as expected, but the question was always going to be – could they turn that dominance into goals? They answered emphatically, with a wonderful solo effort from Emily Condon levelling the scores at half-time before Matilda McNamara scored the go-ahead goal from a corner.

Heyman started and played the full match for Canberra United.

Sydney FC 2 – 0 Perth Glory

Sydney FC also secured their first win of the season, establishing themselves as title contenders with a 2-0 victory over Perth Glory.

The Glory dominated large parts of the first half but were unable to find the back of the net against a typically sturdy Sky Blue defence. Sydney made them pay in the second half, with Bianca Galic scoring her first goal for Sydney. After an extended thunderstorm break, Panama international Riley Tanner made it two, after assisting the first, and secured the win for the home side.

Melbourne Victory 1 – 0 Central Coast Mariners

Melbourne Victory ground out an all-important three points in last season’s Grand Final rematch, defeating the champions, the Central Coast Mariners, 1-0.

Rhianna Pollicina’s second-half goal was the difference as the Mariners struggled to create chances against the relentless Victory outfit. It was a fitting moment to celebrate Pollicina’s 100th game in the competition, having previously played for the Newcastle Jets and Melbourne City.

Isabel Gomez was a second-half substitute for the Mariners as she continues her recovery from injury.

Wellington Phoenix 1 – 1 Newcastle Jets

The Wellington Phoenix remain undefeated, but without a win, drawing 1-1 with the Newcastle Jets at home.

Brooke Nunn struck early for the home side, before Melina Ayres equalised from the penalty spot – her first goal since returning from a sabbatical. It was an even game that was reflected by the points being shared.

Natasha Prior started and played the full game in the heart of the Newcastle Jets' defence.

Brisbane Roar 0 – 1 Western Sydney Wanderers

The Western Sydney Wanderers shocked league leaders Brisbane Roar, coming away from Spencer Park with a 1-0 victory.

Both teams had periods on top, with the Wanderers especially impressive in the first half before Brisbane established a foothold in the second. However, it was the Wanderers who would score the only goal of the match in the 88th minute. Ella Buchanan’s endeavour kept the ball alive, and the cutback found Olivia Price, who finished from close range to give the visitors the victory.

Tameka Yallop started her first game back from injury before being substituted off in the second half. Grace Kuilamu, Sharn Freier and Chloe Lincoln all also started for the Roar.
