Matildas At Home Preview: Premiership on the line in final regular season round

Only nine games remain in the A-League Women's regular season, with finals just on the horizon. The race to claim a top-four spot is still going strong, with two teams vying for the final spot.

Re-scheduled matches and postponements have meant that nine games are left to play in the final round, with some teams playing twice within a week.

Western Sydney Wanderers host Wellington Phoenix in a rescheduled fixture from last weekend, both sides sit at the bottom of the table with seven points and four points respectively.

The two sides met in the opening game of the season, playing out a 0-0 draw in December.

Since then, the Nix have picked up their first-ever win in the A-League Women's and will be hoping another win is in store against Wanderers so they can elevate themselves from the bottom of the ladder.

On a positive note for the Nix, their Football Ferns will be up for matchday selection, with skipper and starting goalkeeper Lily Alfeld expected to start between the sticks for Gemma Lewis' side.

Meanwhile, in Melbourne, City will be looking to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Brisbane Roar when they host the Newcastle Jets.

Rado Vidošić's side struggled for shots on goals against Roar, missing the attacking ability of Holly McNamara who is out with an ACL injury.

Newcastle Jets defender Cass Davis will make history, becoming the first person to play 109 consecutive games for the Jets when she lines up against City.

City is expecting to be back at full strength with their Kiwi duo Hannah Wilkinson and Rebekah Stott returning from international duty for the business end of the season.

With two games in hand, City is still able to catch Sydney FC at the top of the table and claim the Premier's Plate for the third time with wins over Jets and Wanderers later in the week.

Friday night sees the two sides living out of suitcases when Wellington Phoenix host Perth Glory.

Glory is still able to mathematically make the final four, sitting two points behind current fourth place Melbourne Victory. However, former Glory goalkeeper Lily Alfeld might have something to say about that, looking to play spoilsport on her former teammate's chances at making the finals.

Alex Epakis has had a season to remember at the helm of Perth's side, turning their sinking ship around after finishing last on the table last season, to vying for a finals spot.

Melbourne Victory has had a tough run of form recently, collecting only one point from their last three games with a 2-2 draw against Canberra.

The two sides face one another yet again, with Canberra able to wreck Victory's chances of defending their championship title if they defeat the Victory.

Kyra Cooney-Cross and Courtney Nevin will be crucial for Jeff Hopkins' side in their final fixture of the regular season. Victory could also be without regular shot-stopper Casey Dumont who went off injured in their 3-0 loss to Adelaide United.

Newcastle Jets host Brisbane Roar in their second fixture of the week at No. 2 Sportsground.

With neither team able to make a late burst to steal a finals sport, both will be playing for pride. Garrath McPherson's Roar side proved they still have plenty of fight with Katrina Gorry describing Roar's 1-0 win over City as “We’re here to ruin peoples finals”.

Wanderers could themselves "ruin" City's chances at claiming the Premier's Plate, funnily enough, doing a favour for their rivals Sydney FC in the process if they were to hold them to a draw or steal three points from City.

However, the game with the biggest ramifications on the title race will see current second-placed Adelaide United host ladder leaders Sydney FC.

The Reds clinched their first-ever finals appearance last weekend in their 3-0 win over Victory, whilst if Sydney FC collects a draw or a win over Adelaide, they will lift the Premier's Plate for a record fourth time.

Cortnee Vine and Remy Siemsen are back at their best in recent weeks, both finding the back of the net after returning from international duty with the Matildas.

Finally, the last game of the round will see Brisbane Roar host Jets, in a reverse of the midweek fixture.

Jets will be coming into the game off the back of two games throughout the week, with coach Ash Wilson able to give some of her scholarship players a run around the park in their final game of the season.

Roar on the other hand still has a game against Canberra in limbo after it was postponed due to weather two weeks ago and then postponed again this week due to the current flooding in south-east Queensland.
