Matildas Abroad Review: Kerr, Foord, Sayer score; AS Roma advance to Italian Cup final

Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Amy Sayer all scored over the weekend as CommBank Matildas returned to their clubs after the Asian Cup.

In Italy, Winonah Heatley's AS Roma have advanced to the final of the Italian Cup after a hard-fought semi-final victory across two legs.

England

WSL

Despite a second-half red card, Liverpool overcame Everton in the Merseyside Derby 3-2. Liverpool raced to a three-goal advantage in the first half and did not relinquish their lead. Clare Wheeler came on for Everton as a second-half substitute.

A first-half brace to Dutch international Vivianne Miedema meant that Manchester City defeated Manchester United 3-0. The result means that City only need one point from their final three games to seal the title. Mary Fowler came off the bench in the second half for City.

Arsenal made a statement over their North London rivals, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 5-2. Alessia Russo scored a first-half hat-trick while Caitlin Foord was on the scoresheet in the second half. Foord was a half-time substitute while Steph Catley started for Arsenal. Kyra Cooney-Cross will be unavailable for the Gunners for the rest of the season. Clare Hunt was unavailable for Spurs through injury, while Charli Grant was not named in the matchday squad.

West Ham took a valuable point away from the London City Lionesses. Jana Fernandez’s goal for London City in the first half was cancelled out by Oona Siren's equaliser for the Hammers in the second half. Katrina Gorry was a half-time substitute for West Ham, while Alanna Kennedy came off the bench in the second half for the Lionesses.

Sam Kerr was at the centre of everything as Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 4-3 in a rollicking battle. Kerr scored the first goal for Chelsea before assisting Sjoeke Nusken’s winner late in the second half. Kerr started and played the full match, as did Ellie Carpenter.

Brighton & Hove Albion dealt a big blow to Leicester City, defeating them 1-0. Kiko Seike scored the only goal of the game just after the half-time break. Charlie Rule was an unused substitute for the Seagulls, as was Emily van Egmond for the Foxes.

WSL2

Newcastle United played out a potentially costly 1-1 draw with Sunderland. They were unable to hold onto the lead that they took early in the first half. Kaitlyn Torpey was a half-time substitute.

Sweden

AIK Fotboll started their season with a 1-0 victory over IFK Norrköping. Jada Whyman was unavailable for AIK due to the knee injury that kept her out of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026™.

Malmö FF completed a comprehensive 3-0 victory against Uppsala to begin their campaign. Amy Sayer scored in the second half in her league debut for her new club after being substituted on in the first half. Courtney Nevin was a late second-half substitute.

FC Rosengård were defeated 3-1 in a tough first outing against Hammarby. Remy Siemsen started the match before being withdrawn in the second half.

France

Lyon drew 2-2 with Strasbourg in only the second occasion that they have dropped points this season. Remarkably, Strasbourg are a side that is not close to challenging for playoff spots. Teagan Micah remains unavailable for Lyon with symptoms of a concussion.

United States

NWSL

Portland Thorns defeated Kansas City Current 2-0. It was a good first outing of the season for Mackenzie Arnold, who made four saves and kept a clean sheet. The result sees the Thorns move to fourth after four games.

USL

DC Power were defeated 2-0 by Tampa Bay Sun. Morgan Aquino remained an unused substitute in her first game back after the Asian Cup.

Germany

Eintracht Frankfurt secured an important three points, defeating Koln 2-1. Japanese international Remina Chiba scored the winner on her return from the Asian Cup. Hayley Raso was not named in the matchday squad.

TSG Hoffenheim defeated Freiburg 2-1 to remain in the hunt for a European qualification place. Jamilla Rankin was a second-half substitute.

Italy

AS Roma advanced to the final of the Italian Women’s Cup with a 2-1 second-leg victory over Inter Milan. Winonah Heatley was a second-half substitute to help see them over the line in the semi-final.
