FIFA Women’s Champions Cup

Arsenal had to work hard, but defeated Corinthians 3-2 to become the first-ever winners of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.

The Gunners took the lead twice, either side of half-time, but the Brazilian side never let up their pressure. They were rewarded with a 96th-minute penalty kick converted by Vic Albuquerque to send the game to extra time. Up stepped Caitlin Foord, who was cool as you like under pressure to score the winner in the 104th minute.

Following the same pattern as the first two games, Brighton scored first, but the Lionesses took the lead by half-time thanks to Freya Godfrey. They were able to hold on despite immense Brighton pressure to take the three points. Charlize Rule started for Brighton while Alanna Kennedy was a second-half substitute for the Lionesses.

Manchester City asserted their dominance on top of the table with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Chelsea. Kerolin scored a hat-trick on a day to remember in sky blue. It was also a wonderful occasion for Mary Fowler, who made her return to the pitch in the 76th minute after rupturing her ACL last April. For Chelsea, Ellie Carpenter started while Sam Kerr was introduced in the second half.
