Kaitlyn Torpey has signed for Newcastle United in the Women's Super League 2, making the move from the Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League.
Torpey signed with The Magpies after spending the last two seasons in the NWSL, making the move from Melbourne City to San Diego Wave in a record transfer fee in February 2024.
The defender was then traded to the Portland Thorns for the 2025 season, where she made 20 appearances.
Newcastle United currently sit in fourth place in the WSL 2, three points outside of the automatic promotion spots to the top flight. Torpey will link up with a fellow Australian at the club, Tanya Oxtoby, who was appointed as coach in November 2025.
"Newcastle is a club that’s really investing in its players and pushing hard for promotion, and that’s something I wanted to be part of. I’ve never played in a league with promotion and relegation before, so it’s a new challenge for me, and one I’m really excited about.” Torpey said on signing for Newcastle.
“With the Asian Cup coming up, it was important for me to be playing regularly and building fitness. From my first conversation with Tanya, she made it clear that the club was fully aligned with my national team goals, especially around the Asian Cup. Tanya and Joe already have a strong relationship, and that was a big factor in my decision.”
“I’m really looking forward to being part of a long-term project and seeing it through with the club. I genuinely believe Newcastle is going places, and I want to play my part in that. The city and the fans here are some of the most passionate I’ve seen, which makes it an amazing place to be.”
Newcastle United take on West Ham United in the FA Women's Cup Fourth Round tomorrow morning, and then get back to WSL 2 action on January 26th when they take on Charlton. Select matches from the WSL 2 are streamed via their YouTube Channel.
