McCormick returns to the Westfield W-League eager to impress

Jenna McCormick is back on Australian shores and determined to catch the eye of incoming Westfield Matildas Head Coach Tony Gustavsson with a strong domestic campaign.

The former Melbourne Victory defender has this week signed with cross-town rivals Melbourne City after a challenging period with Real Betis in Spain.

Back in familiar territory, the 26-year-old is eager to hit the ground running in a City blue shirt.

“I’m the type of player that puts 100% of my work ethic in and looks to gain respect early on,” McCormick said.

“That's what you'll get from me as a player and I certainly feel like I've been raised to have that sort of mentality.”

McCormick explained how the professional environment on offer at the reigning W-League Champions made her decision relatively straightforward.

Having made her national team debut in November 2019, she is confident that she has picked the perfect destination to audition for a return to the national team set-up with several major tournaments on the horizon.

“Right now the goal is the Olympics next year and I'm just needing to do what's best for me,” she declared.

“To come home from Spain and be in a good environment where I know that I'm going to get better and I'm going to develop, I know I’m going to put myself in the best position for selection in a few months time.”

McCormick is ready to put her best foot forward in order to add to her four Westfield Matildas caps under new boss Tony Gustavsson.

“I still have to get to know him (Gustavsson) and I obviously to be able to make a good impression I need to be playing,” she said.

“We don't know what kind of style he wants to play at the moment so that's a little bit tricky, but I just want to be able to find that happiness again and find that drive to be able to play freely.

“I want to be in that place where I know I'm getting the best out of myself to be able to make a good first impression and then get in the next camp and go on from there.”

The new Westfield W-League season kicks off on the 27th December.

McCormick will hope to make her City debut in a blockbuster Grand Final rematch against Sydney FC at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on December 30.
