Gorry: We'll take confidence out of the win

CommBank Matildas midfielder Katrina Gorry said that the team would take confidence out of their 5-0 victory over New Zealand in Gosford on Friday evening.

She was speaking to the media after scoring the fifth goal in the comprehensive victory.

"Overall, we moved the ball really well," she summarised.

"We created good chances. I thought some of our crosses could have been a bit more clinical, finding players and putting more of it in the back of the net - but we'll take the win and take the confidence out of it."

She said that there was plenty to work on, but it was an overall pleasing performance.

"I thought we played really well in patches," she said.

"We scored some nice goals, obviously. I think everyone enjoys being back on home soil, and it was a great crowd out there tonight.

"We've just got to get our rest defence right. When you've got a lot of the ball, you've just got to make sure you don't get done on transition. There were a few times we did, and we need to make sure we clean those patches of game up and keep the ball a bit better in certain areas."

The game saw Gorry team up with her long-term partner in crime in midfield, Kyra Cooney-Cross. Cooney-Cross was also on the scoresheet, scoring a long-range screamer in the 71st minute.

"She's an incredible player; she makes my job easy," Gorry expressed.

"It's been so nice to share the field with her for so many years. I've got to keep her in line a lot of times. But when we're out in the field, everything just flows. I'm glad she got a goal tonight. I think she's been waiting for another one, and it's nice to do it in that sort of way, isn't it?"

Gorry scored the fifth goal of the game and celebrated with the same 'rocking baby' celebration that became iconic during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 quarter-final penalty shootout against France.

"It felt good. I haven't scored in a long time, to be honest," she said.

"It's just nice to be back on the field and enjoying it. I love being back in Australia. I love being back in the warm weather, and I was super excited to come home to play in front of home fans."

She said that she was expecting a tough game on Tuesday night against the same opponents.

"We know New Zealand's always going to be tough, you've just got to break them down," she assessed.

"Sometimes the first 15 minutes can be tough, but you slowly break them down and work it out. I thought we did that really well tonight. We were patient, and then when they got a little bit tired, we were able to come to life and put goals in the back of the net.

"I think the second game is probably going to be a tough game for us. We got to get back up again, and I'm sure they'll change a few things tactically. It'll be a great contest."
