Matildas Abroad Review: Whyman keeps fifth clean sheet in six games

Jada Whyman kept her fifth clean sheet in six games as AIK Fotboll continue their rise up the Damallsvenskan table since her return from injury.

Elsewhere, Cortnee Vine made her first start of the season for the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL.

United States

The Portland Thorns were defeated 1-0 by Bay FC. Despite having more possession and more opportunities, they were not able to find the breakthrough that they needed to walk away with points. Kaitlyn Torpey started for the Thorns while Mackenzie Arnold remains unavailable with a foot injury.

Angel City FC drew 2-2 in a topsy turvy game with the Chicago Stars. Angel City took the lead in the first half before a quickfire double from Chicago saw them take the lead instead. Mary Alice Vignola’s 80th-minute equaliser saw the points shared. Alanna Kennedy started and played the full match for Angel City.

Cortnee Vine made her first start of the season, but her team ultimately fell short, with the Washington Spirit defeating the North Carolina Courage 3-1. The Spirit were clinical with their opportunities, and the Courage were not able to claw the goals back they needed. Vine played 72 minutes in her start.

Canada

Calgary Wilds FC withstood a late comeback charge from the Halifax Tides to win 3-2. Former A-League Women’s star Ally Green scored first as Calgary raced to a 3-0 lead at half-time. Halifax made it nervy with two goals in the second half, but Calgary were able to hold on to the three points. Kahli Johnson was unavailable for Calgary due to the injury she picked up in the international window.

Sweden

Jada Whyman kept yet another clean sheet, and AIK Fotboll continued their fantastic start to the season, with a 1-0 victory over Rosengård. Adelisa Grabus scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after Rosengård were reduced to ten players in the 62nd minute. Whyman has now kept five clean sheets in six games since her return from injury.

Kristianstads DFF continued their good form of late, defeating Alingsås 3-0. The result puts them fourth on the table, only one point behind third - the cutoff for continental qualification - and only three points behind first. Remy Siemsen came off the bench to assist the third goal, which was scored by Beata Olsson. Amy Sayer was unavailable for Kristianstads match day squad.

Denmark

FC Nordsjælland were defeated 1-0 by Køge in the penultimate game of the league season. The only goal of the game was scored by American Olivia Garcia in the first half. The result means that Nordsjælland will need a point from their final game against champions Fortuna Hjørring in order to secure second place and European football next season. Winonah Heatley started and played the full game for Nordsjælland.
