Matildas Abroad: Torpey scores; pointy end of the season in NWSL, Damallsvenskan

Kaitlyn Torpey scored her first goal for the San Diego Wave midweek as she helped defeat Vancouver Whitecaps in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup.

Meanwhile, CommBank Matildas are involved in must-win games as the NWSL and the Damallsvenskan leagues inch closer to the finish line.

CONCACAF W Champions Cup

Kaitlyn Torpey scored her first goal for the Wave as San Diego defeated Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 midweek. Torpey started the game at left back and contributed to the dominance of the NWSL side, winning with 72% possession and after taking 32 shots. Emily van Egmond also took part, coming off the bench in the 66th minute.

England

Brighton & Hove Albion take on Aston Villa on Saturday, 9.30pm AEST. Both teams have started the season in a promising light and three points for either side could go a long way. Charlie Rule has been unavailable for Brighton but will hope to make her return soon.

Manchester City host West Ham on Sunday, 11pm AEST. On paper, City should have few problems getting past the Hammers – but in the WSL, any team can beat any other on their day. Alanna Kennedy and Mary Fowler will be available for City, while Katrina Gorry will likely line up in midfield for West Ham.

Arsenal take on Everton on Monday, 12am AEST. The Gunners will be hoping to continue their positive early season form while Everton are seeking their first point. Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross will be available for Arsenal, while Steph Catley will be hoping to make her return. Clare Wheeler will be available for Everton.

Tottenham Hotspur host Liverpool on Monday, 12.15am AEST. Spurs are one of three teams with the opportunity to go top of the table, given the postponement of Chelsea v Manchester United, while Liverpool are seeking their first win after two draws to start the season. Charlotte Grant, Hayley Raso and Clare Hunt will be available for Tottenham, while Teagan Micah is unavailable for Liverpool through injury.

Leicester City take on Crystal Palace on Monday, 1am AEST. Palace have had a difficult start to the season after being newly promoted from the Championship, and the Foxes will be keen to take advantage with three points of their own. Courtney Nevin will be available for Leicester.

The game between Chelsea and Manchester United has been postponed due to Chelsea's UEFA Women's Champions League duties.

France

Lyon will take on Montpellier on Sunday, 6am AEST. The defending champions have had a perfect start to the season so far and will be hoping that continues this weekend. Ellie Carpenter will be available to appear for Lyon.

United States

The North Carolina Courage host the San Diego Wave on Sunday, 10am AEST. The Wave need to make up five points in the last four games in order to make the play-offs – three points here would go a long way to achieving that goal. For the Courage, meanwhile, three points would secure their place in the top eight.

Cortnee Vine has been unavailable for North Carolina in the past three games and will be hoping to make her return this week. Emily van Egmond and Kaitlyn Torpey will be available for the Wave.


Portland Thorns will take on the Utah Royals on Sunday, 1pm AEST. The Thorns have a three-point buffer in the play-off places but will need to make sure they don’t slip up against a Royals side who are staring down the possibility of finishing bottom of the table. Mackenzie Arnold will be available to line up between the sticks for Portland.

Sweden

Kristianstads DFF will have the task of being the first team all season to take points off Rosengård when they face off on Saturday, 2am AEST. Three points for Kristianstads will see them continue to put pressure on the top three places, but it will be some task to get anything out of the league leaders. Remy Siemsen and Clare Polkinghorne will feature for Kristianstads.

BK Häcken travel to take on Vittsjö GIK on Saturday, 11pm AEST. While the race for the title is all but done, Häcken will know that they need to keep on winning to secure a place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League next season. Aivi Luik will unavailable for Häcken.

AIK Fotboll travel to take on KIF Örebro DFF on Monday, 12am AEST. With the teams locked on 15 points apiece in 12th and 13th, this is match with real implications. AIK will be hoping to build on a vital three points last week and get themselves out of the automatic relegation zone with a win on the weekend. Jada Whyman will be in goals for AIK after keeping her first clean sheet last week.

Denmark

FC Nordsjælland take on HB Køge on Saturday, 11pm AEST. A win against fifth-place Køge will see them maintain their place on top of the table as they look to defend last season’s title. Winonah Heatley will be available to line up for Nordsjælland on the weekend.

Netherlands

FC Twente host PSV Vrouwen on Sunday, 12.30am AEST. Both teams secured three points in the first round and will be hoping to continue their form into the remainder of the season. Daniela Galic will be available for FC Twente.
