Matildas Abroad Review: Kerr scores in final Chelsea game; Fowler, Heatley lift trophies; Siemsen scores

Sam Kerr scored a fantastic volley in her final game for Chelsea on the weekend, equalling Fran Kirby’s record for most Chelsea goals across all competitions in doing so.

Elsewhere, Mary Fowler and Winonah Heatley lifted trophies with their clubs as their league seasons came to a close, and Katrina Gorry made her final appearance for West Ham. 

Remy Siemsen also had a good weekend, scoring her third goal in four games in Sweden.

England

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to finish their season with a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. Madi Haley scored in the first half for the Seagulls before goals from Olivia Holdt and Toko Koga won it for Spurs. Clare Hunt and Charli Grant were unavailable for Spurs, but Charlie Rule started for Brighton.

Sam Kerr’s Chelsea career came to an end in typical fashion, scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. Kerr’s first-half goal was a fantastic volley on the end of a Lauren James cross that saw Chelsea finish the season in third, nine points ahead of United. She started the game and was given a rousing reception as she departed in stoppage time. Ellie Carpenter played the full game at right-back.

Everton scored a late stoppage-time winner to finish their season on a high, defeating Leicester City 1-0. Mayumi Pacheco scored in the 96th minute to secure the win. Clare Wheeler was a second-half substitute for the Toffees, while Emily van Egmond started for Leicester. Everton finished in eighth, while Leicester City have a play-off next weekend to determine if they will remain in the WSL next season.

A first-half brace for Alessia Russo helped Arsenal to a 3-1 victory over Liverpool to finish the season. They farewelled a number of club legends in the game, including Irish international Katie McCabe and England international Beth Mead. Caitlin Foord started in the win that ensured the Gunners finished second, while Steph Catley made her return from injury for a five-minute cameo at the end. Kyra Cooney-Cross remains unavailable for Arsenal.

London City Lionesses defeated Aston Villa 2-1 thanks to a Freya Godfrey stoppage-time winner. They ended their first season back in the WSL in sixth, but showed enough glimpses that they will be confident to improve in the next campaign. Alanna Kennedy started and played the whole match in midfield for the Lionesses.

Manchester City celebrated their title with a 4-1 victory over West Ham. Khadija Shaw scored a brace in what could be her final appearance for the club. Mary Fowler started and played the full match for City, and was heavily involved in the goals, while Katrina Gorry was substituted on late to make one final appearance for West Ham.

Sweden

FC Rosengård were denied three points by a stoppage-time goal, ultimately drawing 2-2 with Kristianstads DFF. Remy Siemsen was on the scoresheet against her former club, but ultimately, they could not secure their first win of the season. Siemsen has now scored three goals in four games.

United States

Mackenzie Arnold played a vital role in a clean sheet, but the Thorns were not able to secure three points, drawing 0-0 with Angel City. The result means that the Thorns have dropped to third on the NWSL table after ten games played.

France

Lyon defeated Nantes 8-0 in the league play-off semi-final. They failed to break through in the first half, but the goals flowed freely in the second. Teagan Micah remains unavailable due to symptoms of concussion.

Germany

Eintracht Frankfurt overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Union Berlin 4-2. The result secures their place in Europe next season, finishing third in the Frauen-Bundesliga. Hayley Raso was a second-half substitute for Frankfurt.

TSG Hoffenheim finished the season with a scoreless draw against RB Leipzig. The result means that they have finished fourth, five points away from Frankfurt in third. Jamilla Rankin started at left-back in the final game of the season.

Italy

Sassuolo drew 1-1 with Napoli in their final game of the season. The result means that they finished ninth, eight points above relegation. Jessika Nash was not named in the matchday squad.

Como defeated Inter Milan 3-0. Nadine Nischler was the main threat, scoring a brace either side of half-time. Alex Chidiac started for Como to cap off what has been a successful season in Italy for herself. Como finished eighth, but only nine points away from European qualification.

AS Roma celebrated their league title win with a 2-0 victory over Genoa, a second-half brace from Giulia Dragoni proving the difference. Winonah Heatley started and played the full game for Roma. They now have the cup final against Juventus to prepare for next week.

Canada

Calgary Wild picked up their first point of the season with a 2-2 draw against Montreal Roses. Mya Jones scored twice to secure the point. Kahli Johnson came off the bench in the second half for Calgary.
