Matildas Abroad Review: Kerr scores as Chelsea, City, Brighton into FA Cup semi-finals; Chidiac scores for Como

Sam Kerr helped Chelsea book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals with a goal in their 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Elsewhere, Brighton & Hove Albion upset Chelsea to advance, while Manchester City overcame second-tier Birmingham. In Italy, Alex Chidiac was on the scoresheet in a dramatic back-and-forth game against Winonah Heatley's AS Roma.

England

Women’s FA Cup Quarter-Finals

Brighton & Hove Albion pulled off a massive upset against Arsenal, defeating them 2-0. Former Sydney FC striker Madi Haley scored just after half-time before Caitlin Hayes doubled their advantage later in the half. Charlie Rule played the full match for Brighton, while Caitlin Foord came off the bench for Arsenal in the second half. Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross were unavailable for the Gunners.

Chelsea had to battle hard, but overcame Tottenham Hotspur 2-1. Sam Kerr scored the opening goal in the first half before Veerle Buurman scored the winner deep in the second. Kerr started and played the full match for Chelsea, as did Ellie Carpenter. Charli Grant was an unused substitute for Spurs, while Clare Hunt remains unavailable due to injury.

Manchester City did just enough to defeat Birmingham 1-0. A first-half goal for Khadija Shaw was enough for the heavy favourites to secure the win. Mary Fowler was a second-half substitute for City.

WSL2

Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest in a big blow to their promotion hopes. Alana Murphy scored for Forest before Newcastle scored a stoppage-time equaliser to keep their season alive by a thread. They’ll need to win both their final games and rely on Crystal Palace losing both of theirs to have a chance of finishing third. Kaitlyn Torpey started and played the full game for the Magpies.

France

Lyon defeated Strasbourg 6-0 in the Coupe de France semi-final, making sure not to repeat any hiccups in the league. Teagan Micah is still unavailable as she continues to make her way back from a concussion.

Sweden

AIK Fotboll came from behind to defeat FC Rosengård 2-1. Trailing at the break, two late goals saw them leave with all three points. Remy Siemsen started and played the full game for Rosengård, while Jada Whyman remains unavailable for AIK.

Malmö FF drew 1-1 with IFK Norrköping away from home. Isabella D’Aquila struck first for Malmö, but they were unable to capitalise on their advantage. Amy Sayer started for the visitors while Courtney Nevin was a second-half substitute.

United States

NWSL

The Portland Thorns were pegged back twice to draw 2-2 with the North Carolina Courage. Mackenzie Arnold started in goal for the Thorns. The result puts Portland in second behind the San Diego Wave.

USL

DC Power were defeated 3-1 by Fort Lauderdale. The result is a blow for DC’s hopes of finals football. Morgan Aquino was an unused substitute for the Power.

Italy

AS Roma defeated Como 4-3 in a wild back-and-forth affair. Roma raced to a two-goal lead before a burst from Como – including a goal to Alex Chidiac – saw them lead 3-2 at the break. Substitute Alayah Pilgrim ultimately scored the winner for Roma in the second half in a vital result for the title race – they are now six points clear with four games remaining and confirm European football for next season. Winonah Heatley played the first half for Roma while Chidiac started for Como.

Sassuolo fell 3-0 to AC Milan. They are now four points above the relegation zone, and will hope to pick up more points in the final four games to reach safety. Jessika Nash was a second-half substitute for Sassuolo.

Mexico

Emily Gielnik scored a hat-trick for Monterrey in their 3-0 win over Club Universidad Nacional. Rayadas currently sit in first place in the Clasura season of the league, with one game left.
