Matildas Abroad Review: Kerr scores brace for Chelsea in FA Cup; Roma move six points clear on top of Serie A

Sam Kerr scored twice for Chelsea as the defending FA Cup champions advanced to the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, Lyon dropped their first points of the league season, while AS Roma defeated Sassuolo to go six points clear on top of the league table.

Everton defeated West Brom 5-0 on Friday morning (AEDT). Yuka Momiki scored a brace in the first half before the Toffees ran away with the result. Clare Wheeler was introduced in the fourth minute after an injury-enforced change and played the rest of the game.

West Ham eased past second-tier Newcastle United 3-0. Viviane Asseyi, Riko Ueki and Sarah Brasero-Carreira were on the scoresheet for the Hammers. Katrina Gorry was rested for West Ham, while Kaitlyn Torpey was introduced to the Newcastle fans, but did not debut in the game.

London City Lionesses defeated Sunderland 1-0 thanks to a goal to 19-year-old Wassa Sangare. Alanna Kennedy started for the Lionesses in midfield.

Chelsea put five goals past Crystal Palace, running out 5-0 victors. Sam Kerr scored a brace either side of half-time after starting the match, while Ellie Carpenter replaced her after 60 minutes.

Tottenham Hotspur continued their good league form in the Cup, defeating fellow top-tier side Leicester City 3-0. Bethany England, Drew Spence and Lenna Gunning Williams were the goal scorers. Clare Hunt started and helped Spurs keep a clean sheet, while Emily van Egmond played the second half for the Foxes. Charli Grant remains unavailable for Tottenham with a knee injury.

Brighton & Hove Albion advanced to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. Former A-League Women’s star Madison Haley scored in the first half before Jelena Cankovic sealed the result in the second. Charlie Rule started in defence for the Seagulls.

Manchester City hit third-tier Bournemouth for six, defeating them 6-0. Laura Coombs scored a brace as City outclassed their opponents. Mary Fowler remains unavailable for City.

Stina Blackstenius and Kim Little were on the scoresheet for Arsenal as they overcame Aston Villa 2-0. The Gunners were made to work against WSL opposition, but the favourite got the job done in the end. Steph Catley started in defence while Caitlin Foord was introduced in the second half. Kyra Cooney-Cross remains unavailable on personal leave.

France

Lyon dropped their first points of the league season, held to a scoreless draw against Paris FC. However, their place on top remains unthreatened – they still sit ten points clear ahead of second-place Nantes. Teagan Micah was an unused substitute for Lyon.

In mid-week action, Lyon defeated Lens 1-0 to continue their perfect record in the league this season. Lily Yohannes scored the only goal of the game in the first half to help Lyon to victory. Teagan Micah started between the sticks and extended her record to five matches for Lyon without conceding a single goal.

Italy

Como and Napoli played out a scoreless draw as the Serie A Femminile returned. The result moves Como to fifth, only two points away from third, and a European qualification place. Alex Chidiac started in midfield for Como and played the full game.

AS Roma moved six points clear on top of the table with a 2-1 win over Sassuolo. Alice Correlli scored a second-half win for Roma to help them secure the all-important win. Winonah Heatley was an unused substitute for Roma, while Jessika Nash and Jacynta Galabadaarachchi both started for Sassuolo.
