Matildas Abroad Review: Galic scores for Vittsjö; Heatley’s Roma defeated in Serie A Cup final

Daniela Galic has scored her third goal in six starts in the Damallsvenskan as she helped her team to a 3-2 victory on the weekend.

Elsewhere, Winonah Heatley’s AS Roma fell agonisingly short in the Serie A Cup final against Juventus.

England

A 94th-minute Lucy Parker goal saw Aston Villa steal a point from Arsenal as the game finished 1-1. Frida Maanum’s goal early in the first half looked to be enough for the Gunners, but Villa hung in the contest and were rewarded with their late equaliser. Steph Catley started for Arsenal while Caitlin Foord was introduced in the second half. Kyra Cooney-Cross was an unused substitute for Arsenal.

Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Everton 1-0 in a close contest. Michelle Agyemang’s first-half goal was the difference between the two sides. Clare Wheeler played the full match for Everton at right-back, and Charlie Rule started for the Seagulls and was replaced in the 68th minute. 

Tottenham Hotspur continued their impressive start to the season, overcoming Leicester City 2-1. Two goals early in the first half for Spurs proved too difficult for the Foxes to overcome. Clare Hunt played the full game in the heart of defence while Charli Grant was an unused substitute. Emily van Egmond played the full match for the Foxes as an attacking midfielder.

Manchester City defeated London City Lionesses 4-1. Two second-half penalties for Khadija Shaw secured the three points for City after Nikita Parris halved the deficit for the Lionesses in the first half. Alanna Kennedy was an unused substitute for London City, while Mary Fowler remains unavailable for Manchester City as she continues her ACL rehabilitation.

Chelsea finished the weekend’s action with a 4-0 victory over West Ham. It was a comfortable victory for the defending champions, who were already three goals to the good in the 23rd minute before West Ham were reduced to ten players. Sam Kerr was a second-half substitute for Chelsea, while Ellie Carpenter was an unused substitute. Katrina Gorry played 78 minutes in midfield for the Hammers.

Sweden

AIK Fotboll struggled to deal with BK Häcken’s attack, as Häcken defeated them 5-2. AIK scored first and then again in the second half to take a 2-1 lead, but it was all one-way traffic from there as Häcken showed why they are title contenders. Jada Whyman started in goals for AIK.

Daniela Galic was on the scoresheet once again as Vittsjö GIK defeated Piteå IF 3-2. Galic scored the opener – a header from a second ball in after a corner – as Vittsjö held on in a see-sawing match. Galic started the game before being withdrawn in the second half.

Kristianstads DFF secured a late point against Malmö IF to draw 1-1. Mathilde Janzen scored the critical goal for Kristianstads in the 86th minute. Remy Siemsen and Amy Sayer both started for Kristianstads, while Courtney Nevin was a second-half substitute for Malmö.

United States

The Portland Thorns were almost completely shut out of the game against Gotham FC, falling 3-0. Gotham made the most of their opportunities as Midge Purce, Rose Lavelle and Katie Stengel were on the scoresheet. Mackenzie Arnold started in goal for Portland while Kaitlyn Torpey came off the bench late.

The North Carolina Courage fell 2-1 to Seattle Reign in a result that sees them drop out of playoff places. The Courage scored first before an own goal, and a goal for Maddie Dahlien, saw the Reign snatch all three points. Cortnee Vine was an unused substitute for the Courage.

Germany

A rotated TSG Hoffenheim were made to work for it, but eventually defeated a brave Fürth side in the first round of the Women’s German Cup 2-1. Jamilla Rankin started the match for Hoffenheim.

Despite a second-half red card, SC Sand defeated fellow second-tier side SV Meppen 3-0 to advance to the next round.

Hayley Raso started her first game for Eintracht Frankfurt as they secured a 3-1 victory against Viktoria Berlin.

France

Lyon made a huge statement against PSG, defeating their rivals 6-1. Korbin Shrader scored a hat-trick in the second half to blow the game wide open after scores were level for much of the first 60 minutes. Teagan Micah was an unused substitute for Lyon.

Italy

Serie A Cup

AS Roma suffered heartbreak in the Serie A Cup final, falling 3-2 to Juventus. It was a hard-fought affair that looked destined to go into extra time before Lindsey Thomas scored the winner for Juventus in stoppage time. Winonah Heatley started and played the full game in defence for Roma.

Serie B

Como 1907 defeated RES Donna Roma 5-1 as they continued their good start to the season.

Canada

Calgary Wild showed that there was life in them yet, securing a brave 2-0 victory over Montreal Roses. Meggie Dougherty Howard and Jorian Baucom were the goal scorers as Calgary kept its season alive. Kahli Johnson was a second-half substitute as she continues to rebuild her minutes after injury.
