Matildas Abroad Review: Arnold and Torpey help Thorns to a clean sheet to book their spot in the semi-finals

Mackenzie Arnold kept a clean sheet for the Portland Thorns, and Kaitlyn Torpey started, as they advanced to the NWSL playoff semi-finals.

Elsewhere, former CommBank Matilda Aivi Luik claimed the Damallsvenskan title with BK Häcken, while Daniela Galic had yet another goal involvement with an assist for Vittsjö.

England

Arsenal drew 1-1 with Chelsea in a hard-fought contest at the Emirates. Chelsea scored first through Alyssa Thompson before Alessia Russo equalised in the final minutes of the game. Arsenal thought they had all snatched three points soon after, but Frida Maanum was flagged for being offside.

Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley both started for the Gunners, with Kyra Cooney-Cross coming into the game as a second-half substitute. Ellie Carpenter and Sam Kerr both entered the game in the second half for Chelsea.

London City Lionesses defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-2. Spurs came from behind to equalise twice before an own goal, and Freya Godfrey’s second secured the result for the Lionesses. Clare Hunt started and played the full game for Spurs, while Charli Grant was an unused substitute. Alanna Kennedy entered late in the second half for London City.

West Ham earned their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw against Leicester City. It could have been all three points, if not for Shannon O’Brien’s late equaliser for the Foxes. Katrina Gorry started for the Hammers while Emily van Egmond did the same for Leicester.

Manchester City defeated Everton 2-1 to go top of the WSL table. Vivianne Miedema and Khadija Shaw scored either side of the break to elevate City to three points. Clare Wheeler started and played the full game in midfield for the Toffees, while Mary Fowler remains unavailable for Melbourne City as she continues her ACL rehabilitation.

Sweden

BK Häcken were crowned champions this week, after defeating Djurgården 2-0. It was a fantastic way for former CommBank Matilda Aivi Luik to close out her career after being a key part of the Swedish club’s defence since 2022.

AIK Fotboll fell 3-0 to Brommapojkarna in the penultimate round of the season. AIK were never really in the game as Brommapojkarna lifted themselves out of the relegation zone. Jada Whyman is unavailable for AIK due to a knee injury.

Malmö FF defeated Norrköping 4-0 to secure a continental football for next season. Regardless of what happens next week, they will finish third and earn the right to play on the continental stage in 2026/27. Courtney Nevin started for Malmö at left-back.

Daniela Galic picked up an assist as Vittsjö GIK were defeated 2-1 by Växjö DFF. Even in defeat, the youngster continued her fantastic form in Sweden, setting up American striker Anna Haddock for their solitary goal. She started the match for Vittsjö.

Kristianstads DFF take on Linköping on Tuesday, 5am AEDT, where Amy Sayer and Remy Siemsen are expected to take part.

United States

NWSL

The Portland Thorns are through to the next round of the NWSL playoffs, defeating San Diego Wave 1-0 after extra time. Reilyn Turner scored the only goal of the match in extra time to help the Thorns advance. Mackenzie Arnold kept a vital clean sheet in goals while Kaitlyn Torpey started against her former club.

USL

DC Power were defeated 1-0 by Brooklyn over the weekend. Former A-League Women’s player Leah Scarpelli scored the solitary goal. Morgan Aquino started in goals for DC Power.

France

Lyon defeated Montpellier 5-1 to continue their domestic dominance to start the season. Teagan Micah was an unused substitute.

Germany

Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Wolfsburg 3-2 despite playing the majority of the game with ten players. Frankfurt were leading 2-1 when Nina Luhrssen was shown a red card in the first half. However, Wolfsburg missed the resulting penalty, and Rebecka Blomqvist’s second-half goal was enough for Frankfurt to hold on and seal a remarkable victory. Hayley Raso started for Frankfurt.

TSG Hoffenheim fell 1-0 to Køln. Pauline Bremer scored the decisive goal late in the second half to win the game for her side. Jamilla Rankin played the full match in the centre of defence for Hoffenheim.

Italy

AS Roma fell to their first defeat of the season, defeated 5-2 by Fiorentina. Winonah Heatley was sent off in the first half after a second yellow card, and Fiorentina were clinical, piling on the goals as the game continued. Heatley started for Roma but will be suspended for the next game.

Sassuolo came back from two goals behind to draw 2-2 with Inter Milan. The result sees Sassuolo languish in 11th on the table, but with only four points separating them from third. Jessika Nash started for Sassuolo while Jacynta Galabadaarachchi was an unused substitute.

Como defeated Ternana 4-2. They went 3-0 up in the first half and held on in the second to seal all three points. Alex Chidiac started in midfield for Como.

Mexico

CF Monterrey were defeated 5-0 by Club America, 6-1 on aggregate, in the Apertura quarter-final playoffs. Monterrey had an impossible hill to climb when they went down to 10 in the first 15 minutes after Karol Bernal was given her marching orders. Club America took a 3-0 lead heading into the break, following the interval, Rayadas were reduced to 9 players after Daniela Monroy was shown a red card. Emily Gielnik was an unused substitute during the game.
