Matildas Abroad: Raso scores for Frankfurt; FA Cup Round of 16 underway this weekend

Hayley Raso scored for Eintracht Frankfurt midweek as they advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Cup.

This weekend, the FA Cup Round of 16 take place in England, while football continues across Europe.

England

UEFA Women’s Champions League

Arsenal defeated OH Leuven 3-1 in the second leg of the UWCL play-offs, sending them through to the quarter-finals. Alessia Russo scored a brace while Mariona Caldentey also scored from the penalty spot. Caitlin Foord started and played the full game while Steph Catley was a second-half substitute. Kyra Cooney-Cross was not named in the matchday squad.

FA Cup

The FA Cup Round of 16 gets underway this weekend.

West Ham host Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, 11pm AEDT. Brighton are slight favourites, but the Hammers have been in much better form of late. Katrina Gorry will be available for West Ham, while Charlize Rule will be available for Brighton.

Arsenal host Bristol City on Monday, 12am AEDT. Arsenal will be expected to rotate heavily against the second-tier side. Kyra Cooney-Cross, Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord will be available for Arsenal.

The biggest game of the round will be Sam Kerr, Ellie Carpenter, and Chelsea taking on Manchester United. Chelsea defeated Manchester United in last year’s final, and the Red Devils will be out for revenge.

Manchester City hosts Sheffield United on Monday, 1am AEDT. Mary Fowler will be hoping to receive some more minutes ahead of the Asian Cup.

Clare Wheeler’s Everton takes on Liverpool in a Merseyside Derby on Sunday, 3.30am AEDT. Both sides are struggling in the league this season, and any kind of cup run would be a much-needed boost.

Finally, London City Lionesses host Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, 6.30am AEDT. Alanna Kennedy’s Lionesses will be hoping the FA Cup is somewhere they can make a splash in their first WSL season. Spurs are coming off the back of their best-ever FA Cup run last time out and hope to continue that kind of form. Clare Hunt will be available for them while Charli Grant is unavailable due to injury.

Sweden

AIK Fotboll take on Linköping on Saturday, 5am AEDT. AIK are currently top of Group 1 in the Cup and will hope to keep it that way after the match. Jada Whyman will hope to play some competitive minutes in the fixture before heading to Australia for the Asian Cup.

Malmö FF clash with Umeå on Saturday, 11pm AEDT. Courtney Nevin and Amy Sayer will hope to lift Malmö to their first win of the Cup.

Finally, FC Rosengård face a tough fixture against Hammarby on Tuesday, 5am AEDT. Remy Siemsen will be available as they hope for a first win of their own.

France

Lyon takes on Marseille in the league on Sunday, 7am AEDT. Lyon are undefeated and top of the table by a significant margin. Teagan Micah will hope to take part for Lyon.

Germany

UEFA Europa Cup

Eintracht Frankfurt advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Cup with a 3-2 victory over FC Nordsjælland. Hayley Raso scored in the second half after starting for Frankfurt as they completed the second leg victory.

Frauen-Bundesliga

TSG Hoffenheim take on Bayer Leverkusen on Monday, 12am AEDT. A win for Hoffenheim would see them jump above Leverkusen, potentially into third. Jamilla Rankin will be available for Hoffenheim.

Eintracht Frankfurt could also finish the round in third when they take on Freiburg on Tuesday, 4am AEDT. Hayley Raso will hope to continue from where she left off in the Cup on the weekend.

Italy

Como travel to take on Genoa on Saturday, 11.30pm AEDT. Alex Chidiac will be available for Como as they look to make a late push for European qualification places.

AS Roma host Inter Milan on Monday, 1.30am AEDT. Every game is vital for Roma as they try to cling onto their spot on top of the table. Winonah Heatley will be available for Roma.
