Matildas Abroad Preview: Heatley’s Nordsjælland closing in on league title

The action continues after the international break in several leagues around the world. The Damallsvenskan and NWSL begin to hit mid-season, while in Spain the season meanders to its conclusion.

There is no such meandering in Denmark, however, with Winonah Heatley’s FC Nordsjælland a chance of lifting the league trophy this weekend.

It is third against second this weekend as Kristianstads DFF take on BK Häcken on Sunday, 11pm AEST. Häcken will go into the game as favourites – just – but Kristianstads are on a storming run of five wins in a row in the league and will back themselves to get the job done.

Clare Polkinghorne will be available to start for Kristianstads in defence. Amy Sayer is unavailable through injury, while Aivi Luik will similarly be unavailable for Häcken.

USA

It is right back into the action for Emily van Egmond and Kaitlyn Torpey as the San Diego Wave takes on Orlando Pride on Saturday, 12pm AEST. It will be an incredibly tough assignment for the Wave, against a Pride team that currently sits on top of the table.

Van Egmond has been a regular starter for Casey Stoney’s side while Torpey will likely participate from the bench.

Spain

Real Madrid host Athletic Club on Monday, 2.30am AEST. Madrid will finish second, regardless of the results for the rest of the season, but it will look to use these games to prepare for 2024/25. Hayley Raso has been a regular second-half substitute this season and will likely be so again on the weekend.

Denmark

FC Nordsjælland are two points clear on top of the Elitedivisionen Women's table, and with two games to go, the trophy is in their hands. On Sunday, 9pm AEST they take on Kolding IF. If second-place Brøndby IF fails to defeat Fortuna Hjørring, a win for Nordsjælland will see them win the title in the penultimate week. If Brøndby wins, or if Nordsjælland does not pick up three points, the championship will go down to the final game next week.
