Matildas Abroad Preview: Swedish Cup begins

Kyra Cooney-Cross returned to the pitch midweek, as Arsenal defeated OH Leuven 4-0 in the first leg of the UWCL playoffs.

This weekend sees the return of competitive fixtures in Sweden with the start of the Swedish Cup. Remy Siemsen and Amy Sayer will have the chance to impress at their new clubs while Daniela Galic, Jada Whyman and Courtney Nevin will play for the first time this year.

England

UEFA Women’s Champions League

Arsenal eased past Belgian side OH Leuven 4-0 in the first leg of their UWCL playoff. Frida Maanum scored a brace as the defending champions got through a potential banana skin untroubled. Caitlin Foord started for Arsenal, while Kyra Cooney-Cross came off the bench in the second half to mark her first competitive minutes in 2026. Steph Catley was an unused substitute.

WSL

Manchester City take on Leicester City on Saturday, 6am AEDT. City are still well on top of the table but will want to bounce back after last week’s defeat, while the Foxes find themselves needing points to get out of the relegation zone. Mary Fowler will be available for City, while Emily van Egmond will be available for Leicester.

Aston Villa host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 11pm AEDT. Spurs need to keep winning if they are to keep touch with an unlikely top-three push. Clare Hunt is expected to line up in the centre of defence, while Charli Grant is close to returning from a knee injury.

Chelsea play Liverpool on Sunday, 11pm AEDT. The Blues need to keep winning if they are to stave off Arsenal’s challenge to their third place. Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter will be available for Chelsea.

It will be a CommBank Matilda-heavy midfield when Clare Wheeler’s Everton and Katrina Gorry’s West Ham face off on Sunday, 11pm AEDT. It’s a big game for both sides as they continue to look over their shoulder to the threat of relegation.

London City Lionesses travel to take on Manchester United on Sunday, 11pm AEDT. A win for London City will see them establish themselves in the top half of the table, while United are looking to hold on to second place. Alanna Kennedy will be available for the Lionesses.

The final game of the round features Charlie Rule’s Brighton & Hove Albion attempting to overcome an in-form Arsenal on Monday, 1.30am AEDT. Despite some wobbles at the start of the season, Arsenal look ready to finish strong, and any points that Brighton can secure will be a bonus. Steph Catley, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Caitlin Foord will all be available for Arsenal.

WSL2

Newcastle United take on Portsmouth on Monday, 1am AEDT. Portsmouth are currently bottom of the WSL2 table, while a win for the Magpies could see them back in promotion contention. Kaitlyn Torpey will be available for Newcastle.

Alana Murphy's Nottingham Forest will be out to get all three points when they take on 8th-place Sunderland on Monday, 1am AEDT. Forest currently sits in 7th, just 3 points shy of their opponent, and will be looking to pick up maximum points to keep in touch with the top of the table.

Sweden

The Swedish Cup begins this weekend, with the group stage marking the return to competitive football in Sweden in 2026.

Jada Whyman’s AIK Fotboll take on Gefle on Sunday, 1am AEDT. Whyman was injured to end last season and did not feature during their preseason camp, but has been involved in training sessions.

Vittsjö GIK take on FC Rosengård on Sunday, 3am AEDT. Daniela Galic hopes to continue her fantastic form from last season with Vittsjö. Meanwhile, Remy Siemsen scored a hat-trick in preseason for her new club Rosengård and will be hoping to bring that into competitive fixtures.

Malmö FF host Piteå on Sunday, 11pm AEDT. Amy Sayer joined Courtney Nevin at Malmö over the offseason, and she has the chance to make a good first impression on Sunday.

Germany

UEFA Europa Cup

Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Danish side FC Nordsjælland 4-0 in the first leg of the quarter-finals. Rebecka Blomqvist scored a brace as they eased past their opposition. Hayley Raso was a second-half substitute for Frankfurt.

Frauen-Bundesliga

Eintracht Frankfurt take on Carl Zeiss Jena on Sunday, 4.30am AEDT. A win could see them finish the round in a European qualification place. Hayley Raso will be available for Frankfurt as they look to back up their positive midweek result.

TSG Hoffenheim host Hamburger SV on Sunday, 4.30am AEDT as they look to hold on to their place in third. They will be favourites over Hamburger, who are right there with Jena in the relegation zone. Jamilla Rankin will be available for Hoffenheim.

Italy

CommBank Matildas will face off in Italy when Como plays Sassuolo on Saturday, 10.30pm AEDT. Sassuolo secured a vital three points last week but will still be chasing more to feel safe from relegation, while Como are looking to push into the top half of the table. Alex Chidiac will be available for Como, while Jacynta Galabadaarachchi and Jessika Nash may feature for Sassuolo.

AS Roma take on Napoli on Monday, 4am AEDT. Napoli are just sitting outside the top three and Roma will need a positive result to remain five points clear on top of the table. Winonah Heatley will be available for Roma.

DC Power are looking to continue their positive start to 2026 when they take on Tampa Bay Sun in the USL on Sunday, 11.30am AEDT. Tampa Bay are bottom of the table, while a win for DC could see them rise into playoff contention. Morgan Aquino will be available for the Power.
