The CommBank Matildas are set to take on Germany during the upcoming October FIFA Women’s International Window as the team prepares for next year's FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™.
Let’s take a look down memory lane to our previous encounters with the World No.3.
First meeting
The teams first played each other on 13 September 2000 during the Olympic Games, playing at GIO Stadium in Canberra in front of a sold-out crowd of 24,800.
Australia was making their Olympic Games debut during the tournament, qualifying as hosts out of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), which the team was a part of at the time.
The game featured three players who would go on to feature over 100 times for Australia, with Cheryl Salisbury, Anissa Tann and Heather Garriock playing in the game.
Goals from Inka Grings, Bettina Wiegmann and Renate Lingor saw Germany record a 3-0 victory, as they went on to claim the Bronze Medal.
Head-to-head record
The teams have played each other seven times in ‘A’ internationals. Australia have been victorious in two of them, while Germany has recorded victories in four meetings.
They met during the 2024 Olympic Games in Marseille, with Germany recording a 3-0 victory to open their campaign, which saw them claim the Silver Medal.
Australia and Germany also went head-to-head during the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
This meeting in São Paulo saw Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord on the scoresheet in the 2-2 draw, with Germany going on to claim the Gold Medal at the tournament.
Last game
The last time these sides met was on 28 October 2024 in a one-off friendly match in Duisburg, Germany.
The CommBank Matildas were 2-1 victors that day, thanks to debut goals from Kyra Cooney-Cross and Clare Hunt, with Cooney-Cross' strike being nominated for a FIFA Marta Award 2025 for the best goal of the year.
Wini Heatley made her debut during the game, coming off the bench to become CommBank Matilda #230.

With both sides having already booked their spot in next year's FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™, the match-up will be a vital one as preparations continue.
Germany is one of four European nations that have ensured their spot in next year's tournament, after they finished qualifying first in their group and were undefeated during their campaign.
The side will be out for revenge when they head to Brazil next year, after a shock exit during the group stage at the 2023 edition of the tournament.
