Matildas Abroad Review: Gorry scores for Vittsjö GIK; Raso makes her debut for Real Madrid

France

Ellie Carpenter's Olympique Lyonnais kicked off their D1 season with a dominant 4-0 victory over Le Havre. Goals to Eugénie Le Sommer, Wendie Renard, Daniëlle van de Donk and Vanessa Gilles sealed the victory for the defending champions. 

Carpenter started the game and was replaced in the 59th minute by Griedge Mbock Bathy, with the French defender playing her first minutes of league football since sustaining a knee injury in the World Cup qualifiers last year.

Clare Hunt's new side Paris Saint-Germain also kicked off their season with a win, defeating Bordeaux 3-0 after three quick goals in the space of four minutes. Sakina Karchaoui opened the scoring from the spot, with Sandy Baltimore and Grace Geyoro adding their name to the scoresheet soon after.

Hunt did not appear in the matchday squad for her team's first outing of the season, looking to make the squad for their blockbuster clash against Lyon after the international break.

Spain

The Liga F season kicked off after a delayed start, with Real Madrid collecting all three points in a 2-0 victory over Valencia. Athenea del Castillo opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, and new signing Linda Caicedo burst into the box and found del Castillo making a run at the back post. 

 

Raso came off the bench in the 60th minute to make her Real Madrid and Liga F debut, replacing the goalscorer for the final 30 minutes of the game. Naomie Feller doubled the lead in the 72nd minute to secure all three points. 

USA

Emily van Egmond's San Diego Wave went down 2-1 to Kansas City Current, dropping to second place on the ladder after the defeat at home. Debinha and Kristen Hamilton gave Kansas City a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Wave clawed a goal back through Sierra Enge after the halftime break but were unable to find the equaliser. Van Egmond played the full match for the hosts. 

Mexico

Alex Chidiac's Tigres kept the spot at the top of the table with a 4-0 victory over 8th-placed Querétaro. A hat trick to Maricarmen Reyes and a goal to Belen Cruz sealed the win.

Chidiac came off the bench in the 59th minute and went close to opening her account in the 80th minute with a shot from outside the box tipped around the post. 

England

Mary Fowler scored a brace for Manchester City in their 4-3 victory over Everton in their pre-season friendly. Alanna Kennedy made an appearance in the game and went close to finding the back of the net. 

Clare Wheeler also featured in the game for the Toffees, coming off the bench in the 62nd minute for the hosts.

Teagan Micah played a half from Liverpool in their 3-1 victory over Leicester City. Micah was called on the make a save to keep Liverpool's clean sheet intact with 15 minutes left. 

The Foxes clawed back a goal from the spot, with skipper Aileen Whelan's attempt saved by Micah but the follow-up attempt was able to find the back of the net. 

Sweden

Finishing off in Sweden, Clare PolkinghorneKatrina Gorry and Charli Grant's Vittsjö GIK sealed a late 2-1 victory over Uppsala to keep their spot in fifth place.

Gorry scored the opener in the 60th minute before the hosts found the equaliser from the spot with 6 minutes left of regular time. Moa Maria Karlsson sealed the winner for the visitors in the 91st minute to make it three wins on the bounce for Vittsjö GIK. 

Aivi Luik's BK Häcken went down 1-0 to Djurgårdens, dropping to second on the ladder on goal difference. A goal in the 75th minute to Hayley Dowd sealed the win for the hosts. Luik did not feature in the matchday squad for Häcken.
