UWCL Semi-Final Preview: Lyon go head-to-head with French rivals PSG

The first leg of the UWCL semi-finals kicks off early Monday morning for Ellie Carpenter's Lyon, up against French rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

Ellie Carpenter was out of action in Lyon's last UWCL tie, facing a suspension in the second quarter-final leg after receiving a straight red card against Juventus.

Lyon is one step closer to returning to the biggest international stage, missing out on last year's UWCL final for the first time in five years when they were eliminated in the quarter-final by PSG.

The two sides will face one another yet again, with Lyon looking to make an early statement against their French rivals. When the two sides met earlier in the Divison 1 season, Lyon wreaked havoc on PSG, beating them 6-1.

This semi-final tie will be the sixth time – in the space of eight seasons – that the two have gone head-to-head at some stage of the UWCL competition.

Lyon will be without midfielder Damaris Egurrola, facing a suspension for yellow card accumulations.

PSG's win over Lyon in last season's quarter-final saw the side go through on away goals, however, the away goal rule no longer exists in the UWCL. If the second leg is level after 90 minutes, it will go to extra time and, if necessary, penalties.

Carpenter's Lyon ended up beating Juventus 4-3 on aggregate to progress to the semi-final, while PSG had the same result over Bayern Munich.

A familiar foe will be lined up on the other side, with Sakina Karchaoui making the switch from Lyon to PSG. While Lyon shot-stopper Christiane Endler made the opposite move in the offseason.
