Murphy: We continued to build on what we learnt

CommBank Matildas midfielder Alana Murphy said that the team’s performance against Haiti on Wednesday morning (AEDT) was an indication of how the team is learning and growing with every game.

The 21-year-old started for the second time in senior international colours and put out an impressive performance, including picking up an assist.

β€œThe scoreboard is exciting for us and for the fans, but I think the performance we put out was a good one, and we continued to build on what we learnt from Germany,” she explained.

β€œWe’re happy with it.”

She said she was becoming more and more comfortable in the CommBank Matildas environment, having now made eight appearances in the side.

β€œWe have a meeting on match day minus one after dinner, and my name was up there in the starting eleven. I was just really pleased with that,” she said.

β€œI felt good off the back of the Germany game, and I'd like to say I deserved that.

β€œThroughout training, throughout the week, being in camp and previous camps, I think I've been building. Having the people around me support me makes things so much easier, and I feel comfortable.”

Her assist was for fellow youngster Daniela Galic’s first international goal. Murphy said she hopes that the likes of herself and Galic can, in time, create a new CommBank Matildas dynasty.

β€œI just saw Holly [McNamara] set the ball to me, and a few defenders running out, and the gap opened up. It was an easy decision to play Dani,” she recalled.

β€œI’m super proud of Dani for the journey that she's been on, and we've both been on to get to where we are today. You see it with the older ones, like Sam [Kerr], [Caitlin] Foord, and Macca [Arnold]. They've been playing with each other for years, and hopefully you'll be able to see our journeys coming up through the ranks to thrive as well.”

She is hoping that she can continue to learn and grow over the next eight months ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027β„’.

β€œI add a bit of composure and calmness – that is what most people would say about me,” she said.

β€œIn times where the game can be chaotic, and we just need to put a foot on the ball and relax and get the game under us, I can do that.

β€œEight months may sound long, but when you put the days into it, it's not long at all. Each camp that I'm coming into, I'm finding more confidence and stability throughout the group, and I hope that I can play a part in that tournament.”
