Melbourne Victory 1 – 0 Western Sydney Wanderers

Melbourne Victory got their campaign off to a winning start against the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Alana Jancevski scored a goal direct from a free kick in the first half, which proved the difference between the two sides. Courtney Newbon made two saves and kept a clean sheet for Victory in the win.

Newcastle Jets 0 – 1 Perth Glory

Perth Glory snuck past the Newcastle Jets, defeating them 1-0 in a valuable three points away from home.

Rola Badawiya’s first-half penalty proved to be the winner as both sides felt their way into the new season. CommBank Young Matilda Emma Dundas was a standout in midfield for the Jets while Philippines international Emma Tovar was influential for Glory.

Brisbane Roar 2 – 4 Central Coast Mariners

The young stars of the competition showed what they were made of on Saturday afternoon, with the Central Coast Mariners defeating the Brisbane Roar 4-2.

CommBank Young Matildas Peta Trimis and Skye Halmarick were on the scoresheet for the Mariners, while their teammate at the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup – Daisy Brown – scored for the Roar. Morgan Aquino debuted for the Mariners in goal, making two saves, while Chloe Lincoln was between the sticks for the Roar.

Wellington Phoenix 1 – 2 Melbourne City

Melbourne City picked up a valuable three points in New Zealand, defeating a strong Wellington Phoenix side 2-1.

The Grand Final rematch was always billed to be the match of the round, and there were plenty of twists and turns within. Makala Woods gave the home side the lead in the first half before a Melina Ayres penalty and a Momo Hayashi free kick gave City the come-from-behind win.

Tameka Yallop played the full game in her Phoenix debut while Cortnee Vine and Jessika Nash did the same for City.

Sydney FC 2 – 2 Adelaide United

Sydney FC came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Adelaide United to finish the round.

17-year-old Asha Sutton and Riley Cohn (formerly Riley Tanner) were on the scoresheet for Sydney. However, the Reds stayed in the game – firstly through an equaliser in the first half, and then via India Breier opening her account for her new club from a corner.

Jada Whyman is still a couple of weeks away from full fitness and lining up in Sydney FC’s goal. Ilona Melegh was between the sticks for Adelaide.
