Matildas at Home Preview: New CommBank Matildas look to impress; Huge Sydney Derby looms

Round 3 of the A-League Women gets underway this weekend as a whole host of domestic players prepare to enter CommBank Matildas camp next week.

Read our preview of all of the action below.

Brisbane Roar v Perth Glory

Date: Friday, 15 November
Kickoff: 7pm AEDT
Venue: Perry Park
Broadcast: 10Play and Paramount+
Tickets: Ticketek

Two sides who picked up their first victory last week will go head-to-head under lights at Perry Park on Friday night.

The Brisbane Roar looked impressive in their win over Sydney and will be hoping to continue that form. Tameka Yallop will once again be key, while Sharn Freier has been named in their extended squad to make her return after muscle tightness saw her miss last week.

If Perth Glory can control the chaos that has followed their season so far, they may well come up with the goods. Striker Kelli Brown will be central to their hopes as will CommBank Young Matilda Naomi Chinnama in defence.

Sydney FC v Western Sydney Wanderers

Date: Saturday, 16 November
Kickoff: 2.15pm AEDT
Venue: Leichhardt Oval
Broadcast: 10Bold, 10Play and Paramount+
Tickets: Ticketek

The Sydney Derby is always a massive occasion, and this game is no different.

Sydney FC currently sit bottom of the A-League Women table after losing both of their opening games. The defending champions need a response – and there will be no better game to do so than against their city rivals. Hana Lowry will be hoping to use the confidence of her CommBank Matildas call-up to inspire her team to three points.

Western Sydney Wanderers looked shaky in their loss to Adelaide last week and will be searching for a swift response. However, their great rivals have rarely looked more vulnerable – and if the Wanderers are to pick up their first Derby win in several years, there seems no better time to do so.

Melbourne City v Central Coast Mariners

Date: Saturday, 16 November
Kickoff: 4pm AEDT
Venue: ctrl:cyber Pitch
Broadcast: 10Play and Paramount+
Tickets: Ticketbooth

The defending Premiers host the Central Coast Mariners in what is a clash between two of the form teams in the competition.

Melbourne City are two wins from two, but with four goals conceded, will be hoping to tighten up at the back. City will be buoyed by the inclusions of Bryleeh Henry, Leah Davidson and Karly Roestbakken to the CommBank Matildas squad. All three will be crucial to attempting to keep their first clean sheet of the season.

The Mariners did well to secure a point from their clash with Western United and will be looking to continue that form this time around. Jess Nash and Izzy Gomez will form a large part of the spine of the side looking to pick up a huge upset.

Canberra United v Adelaide United

Date: Saturday, 16 November
Kickoff: 4pm AEDT
Venue: McKellar Park
Broadcast: 10Play and Paramount+
Tickets: TicketSearch

After a perfect start to the season, Canberra United will host an Adelaide United side who are themselves in fantastic form.

Last season, these teams finished 11th and 12th, but Canberra are now undefeated in six games. Michelle Heyman has been a key factor in this run of form and after scoring her 100th goal for the club last week will be hoping to add to her tally this time around.

Adelaide won for the first time in 2024 last week and all signs are positive, with new signing Erin Healy and the returning Fiona Worts making a big difference in attack. Matilda McNamara will be part of a defence hoping to keep things safe and secure up the other end.

Newcastle Jets v Wellington Phoenix

Date: Sunday, 17 November
Kickoff: 3pm AEDT
Venue: Maitland Sports Ground
Broadcast: 10Play and Paramount+
Tickets: TicketMaster

Two teams who have yet to pick up three points this season will face off at Maitland Sports Ground this weekend.

The Newcastle Jets have had their moments in the first two rounds, particularly in attack, but defensive errors have let them down. Natasha Prior’s performance will be key in the heart of defence.

Wellington have dominated possession and chances in their games but have been unable to convert. English forward Olivia Fergusson made her debut last week and could be key if she is able to start this weekend.

Melbourne Victory v Western United

Date: Sunday, 17 November
Kickoff: 4pm AEDT
Venue: Home of the Matildas
Broadcast: 10Play and Paramount+
Tickets: Ticketek

Melbourne Victory will be taking on a fellow Victorian side for the second week in a row when they host Western United on Sunday.

Victory only narrowly fell to City last week and will be hoping to bounce back against fellow title contenders Western, who have four points from their first two games. Alex Chidiac and Emily Gielnik will be key to their attacking threats.

Western United had a number of chances last week but were unable to put them away. Chloe Logarzo will be key to them improving their shot conversion rate. At the other end, Chloe Lincoln will be hoping to make her first appearance of the season.
