Matildas Abroad Review: Fowler scores stunner and assists in City win; Siemsen hat-trick in pre-season friendly

Mary Fowler scored a goal and picked up an assist for Manchester City as they defeated Aston Villa on the weekend. Chelsea maintained their significant lead at the top of the WSL with a decisive victory over Arsenal.

Elsewhere, Remy Siemsen scored a hat-trick in a pre-season friendly for Kristianstads.

England

Manchester City were forced to come from behind to defeat Aston Villa 4-2. Vivianne Miedema scored a first-half brace – one assisted by Mary Fowler – before Fowler got on the scoresheet herself, a stunner regaining City’s lead after an own goal. Fowler started and played the full match for City.

Chelsea defeated Arsenal 1-0 to maintain their undefeated record and to keep their title contenders well and truly in their rearview mirror. Guro Reiten’s second-half penalty was the winner for Chelsea, after Katie McCabe’s 82nd-minute red card.

Caitlin Foord, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Steph Catley all started the match for Arsenal. Sam Kerr remains unavailable for Chelsea as she recovers from her ACL injury.

Tottenham Hotspur needed a stoppage-time winner to defeat Crystal Palace 3-2. Spurs raced to a two-goal lead thanks to a brace to Bethany England, but Crystal Palace hauled them back, making it 2-2 through Katie Stengel and Ashleigh Weerden. Olivia Holdt proved the hero for Tottenham, her 95th-minute goal giving them the three points.

Clare Hunt and Hayley Raso both started for Spurs, while Charli Grant was an unused substitute.

Leicester City overcame Liverpool 2-1 in a vital win for the Foxes. The Reds scored first through Olivia Smith, but goals to Janice Cayman and Missy Goodwin for Leicester secured them the three points. Teagan Micah was in goals for Liverpool, while Courtney Nevin was an unused substitute for Leicester.

In another huge result for the bottom of the table, West Ham defeated Everton 2-0 in their third win of the season. Shekiera Martinez scored early before a penalty to Viviane Asseyi just before half-time was enough to secure the result. Katrina Gorry started and played the full match the West Ham while Clare Wheeler did the same for Everton.

Germany

TSG Hoffenheim started 2025 with a 3-0 victory over Carl Zeiss Jena. Marta Cazalla scored a first-half brace before a goal in stoppage time sealed the result. Jamilla Rankin was an unused substitute for Hoffenheim.

Netherlands

FC Twente looked to be heading to a scoreless draw against Utrecht, before a dramatic final ten minutes led to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory. Utrecht scored what they would have thought was the winner in the 85th minute before Nikee van Dijk’s stoppage-time brace snatched the three points. Daniela Galic was an unused substitute for Twente.

Sweden

The preseason for the upcoming Damallsvenskan got underway this weekend.

Remy Siemsen got her 2025 off to the best possible start, scoring a hat-trick for Kristianstads DFF as they defeated Trelleborg 5-2.

AIK Fotboll also played a friendly, which ended in a 1-1 draw with Brommapojkarna. Jada Whyman was not in the starting eleven.
