Matildas Abroad Preview: WSL, Frauen-Bundesliga, and Serie A Femminile prepare for final rounds

Multiple leagues come to a close across Europe this weekend, and several CommBank Matildas bid goodbye to their clubs.

Elsewhere, the Portland Thorns hope to remain top of the NWSL table and Remy Siemsen takes on her old side in Sweden.

England

Arsenal played their final catch-up game on Thursday morning, defeating Everton 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time winner for Stina Blackstenius. Caitlin Foord was a second-half substitute for the Gunner, while Clare Wheeler was ever-present in midfield for Everton.

The final round of the WSL takes place this weekend on Saturday, 10pm AEST.

Brighton & Hove Albion host Tottenham Hotspur. Both clubs have had exceptional seasons, and Brighton is preparing for the FA Cup final. Spurs will be hoping to finish well. Charlize Rule will be available for Brighton while Charli Grant is set to play her final game for Spurs. Clare Hunt remains unavailable for Tottenham due to injury.

Katrina Gorry will farewell West Ham when they host champions Manchester City. The Hammers narrowly avoided a relegation scrap this season, and City will be hoping to finish their historic season on a high. Mary Fowler will be available for City.

Arsenal travel to take on Liverpool, saying goodbye to a number of club legends of their own. Steph Catley, who recently renewed her contract with the North London club, is unlikely to be available as she continues her recovery from injury. Kyra Cooney-Cross remains unavailable. Caitlin Foord, however, is expected to take part.

Sam Kerr’s final game for Chelsea will take place against Manchester United. Kerr leaves the club as their all-time top WSL goalscorer and has won five league titles with the club. Ellie Carpenter is expected to line up alongside her to finish the storied chapter in her career.

London City Lionesses host Aston Villa. They’ll be hoping to have learnt the lessons from their first season back in the top flight to take with them going forward. Alanna Kennedy will be available for the Lionesses.

Finally, Everton and Leicester City will face off. It’s a vital game for Leicester, who are hoping to prepare ahead of their relegation playoff with Charlton. Clare Wheeler will be available for Everton while Emily van Egmond is expected to line up for the Foxes.

Sweden

FC Rosengård hosts Kristianstads DFF on Saturday, 2.30am AEST. Rosengård are still looking for their first win of the season. Remy Siemsen will be hoping that her club can find those three points against her former side.

Amy Sayer, Courtney Nevin and Malmö FF do not play until Thursday, 3am when they’ll take on Hammarby.

United States

Portland Thorns host Angel City FC on Monday, 8am AEST. The Thorns are currently top of the table after nine games, while Angel City are languishing outside the top eight. Mackenzie Arnold recently signed a new contract with the Thorns and will be available this weekend.

France

Lyon takes on Nantes on Sunday, 2am AEST in the play-off semi-final for the Division 1 Feminine. Teagan Micah is not expected to be available for Lyon as she continues to recover from symptoms of concussion.

Germany

The final round of the Frauen-Bundesliga takes place on Sunday, 10pm AEST.

TSG Hoffenheim need three points against RB Leipzig and several other results to go their way if they are to finish third and qualify for Europe. Jamilla Rankin will be available for Hoffenheim after starting last week.

If Eintracht Frankfurt get any kind of point against Union Berlin, it will be they who will be one of three clubs representing Germany in Europe next season. Hayley Raso will be available for Frankfurt.

Italy

AS Roma play their final game of the season against Genoa on Saturday, 11pm AEST. They’ll hope to finish their championship-winning season on a high. Winonah Heatley will be available for Roma.

Como will finish their season against Inter on Sunday, 2am AEST. Como are set to finish eighth regardless, but will hope for a positive result against Inter, who have finished second. Alex Chidiac will be available for Como.

Finally, Sassuolo take on Napoli on Sunday, 11pm AEST. Jessika Nash will be available as they hope to finish as high as ninth.

Calgary Wild host Montreal Roses on Sunday, 7am AEST. Kahli Johnson will be available for Calgary as they hope to kickstart their season.
