Matildas Abroad Preview: San Diego Wave FC kick off their CONCACAF W Champions Cup campaign

San Diego Wave FC will play their first game of the inaugural CONCACAF W Champions Cup when they take on Santa Fé FC in Panama City today (12pm AEST).

Wave FC qualified for the CONCACAF W Champions Cup by virtue of winning the 2023 NWSL Shield last season, while Santa Fé FC is Panama's only team in the tournament, qualifying after being crowned the Liga de Fútbol Femenino Apertura 2024 Champions.

The new interim head coach, Landon Donovan, will take charge of his first game when they kick off their CONCACAF W Champions Cup campaign.

Emily van Egmond will be expected to feature for Wave in the game, with the midfielder travelling to Panama with the side. However, Kaitlyn Torpey will be unlikely to feature in the game as she hasn't travelled with the team.

San Diego Wave has been drawn into Group B for the tournament, alongside Mackenzie Arnold's Portland Thorns, Mexican side Club América, Canada's Whitecaps FC Girls Elite and Panama's Sante Fé FC.

The group stage takes place over August, September and October, with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stage.
