Matildas Abroad Preview: Frauen-Bundesliga, Serie A Cup get underway

Competitive fixtures have begun to ramp up across Europe, with Germany's Frauen-Bundesliga and Italy's Serie A Cup getting underway this weekend.

Elsewhere, Sam Kerr's Gotham FC remain six points clear on top of the NWSL table, while Malmö FF face a stern test to remain in the Damallsvenskan's top three.

Sweden

FC Rosengård take on Kristianstad in another key battle in the Damallsvenskan on Saturday, 11pm AEST. Rosengård are currently four points from safety and any points they can get are invaluable as they hope to avoid relegation. Remy Siemsen, Izzy Gomez and Bryleeh Henry will all be available for Rosengård.

Malmö FF host Hammarby on Saturday, 2am AEST. Hammarby are in second, battling it out for the title with BK Häcken, while Malmö are hoping to hold onto their place in third with points on the weekend. Amy Sayer, Courtney Nevin and Charli Grant will be available for Malmö.

United States

Portland Thorns take on Denver Summit on Sunday, 10.45am AEST as they look to continue their positive run of form. The Thorns are back to fourth after two consecutive wins and will be favourites against a Summit side that are outside of the top eight. Mackenzie Arnold is expected to line up between the sticks for Portland.

Sam Kerr’s Gotham FC travel to play Angel City on Monday, 10am AEST. Gotham are now six points clear on top of the table but, with plenty of the season still to go, will want to keep the good times rolling against 10th-place Angel City. Kerr will be available for Gotham.

Italy

The Serie A Cup returns this weekend.

Last year’s finalists and defending Serie A champions AS Roma will hope to get off to a positive start against Ternana on Sunday, 2am AEST. Wini Heatley will be available for Roma as they hope to add to their extensive trophy cabinet.

FC Como, meanwhile, face a stern test as they travel to take on AC Milan on Sunday, 4.30am AEST. Alex Chidiac built into the season nicely last campaign and will be available for Como.

Germany

The Frauen-Bundesliga gets underway this weekend, with Eintracht Frankfurt hosting FC Køln in their first game of the season. Frankfurt are always there and thereabouts in European places, and will be hoping to challenge for the title this season. Jamilla Rankin and Hayley Raso will both be available for Frankfurt, with Rankin in line to make her competitive debut for the club.

Canada

Calgary Wild take on the Montreal Roses on Monday, 5am AEST. Calgary will be hoping to continue their run of form that has seen them win three consecutive competitive fixtures. Kahli Johnson has made three goal contributions in that time and is in line to continue that on the weekend.

England

Pre-season continues for clubs in England ahead of the WSL starting in September.

Arsenal and Manchester City played a behind-closed-doors friendly during the week, which Arsenal won 2-1. Mary Fowler contributed another assist while Kyra Cooney-Cross made her return to the pitch for the Gunners.

Arsenal host Paris FC on Sunday, 10pm AEST. Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross could all receive some match minutes in this fixture.

Brighton & Hove Albion continue their preparations in Europe. They defeated Genk 3-0 in the Netherlands midweek before travelling to face Barcelona on Saturday, 4am AEST. Charlie Rule will be available for Brighton.

Everton continued their unbeaten pre-season midweek, defeating Leicester City 4-2 in a behind-closed-doors friendly. Holly McNamara played another 30 minutes for her new club while Clare Wheeler was rested.

The London City Lionesses host Atletico Madrid on Sunday, 9pm AEST. Alanna Kennedy will hope to receive more minutes as the team ramps up towards the WSL season.
