CommBank Matildas captain Sam Kerr said that the whole team contributed to the team’s 5-0 win against Malawi on Saturday.
She was speaking alongside her teammates in the aftermath of the win.
“It was a good match. I thought it was a hard match. Everyone contributed – it was a team effort – and it was nice to get our first win,” she said.
“With these teams, you always expect a physical match. That's obviously their strength. So there were a few hard tackles going in there, but I thought we dealt with it well. We got out unscathed, and the win is the most important thing.”
She praised the debut of fellow West Australian Leticia McKenna, who came on to score a goal in the match. McKenna became CommBank Matilda #243 when she was substituted on in the second half.
Kerr and McKenna were teammates when McKenna was a teenager at Perth Glory.
“She deserves it. Little Teesh, she did amazing!” Kerr said.
“She came on, scored, and I think everyone's really enjoyed having her here.”
Kerr handed the microphone over to her teammates during the interview. Defender Winonah Heatley said that the team were rewarded for their focus with the result.
“We knew they were going to be pretty unpredictable, so we had to be really on our toes for the transition and just organize in that way,” she said.
“Working on developing the attack - so that we had numbers around the ball if we were to lose it - was important today.”
Alanna Kennedy had the last word.
“For us, it's an opportunity to win something here, and we want to continue our performances,” she said.
