CommBank Matildas midfielder Daniela Galic said that scoring her first goal for the senior national team was “really special.”
The youngster was speaking after the 7-1 victory over Haiti in Paris on Wednesday morning (AEDT).
“I’m really happy,” she said.
“Obviously, I thought about this for a long time since I made my debut, so to score today was really special.
“My Mum and Dad were in the crowd, so I gave them a little wave after the goal. They’re a big part of this journey and helping me get here today.
“I debuted over a year ago. Being in a few camps and then missing out on a few, you know the level and what you need to do to be there. So, I think it made me even more hungry. Being called in after a while, this time has been really nice, and I know not to take it for granted when I'm here.”
The 20-year-old said that there were lots of positives to take from the game overall, one that she will remember for a long time.
“The first few minutes were very cagey - a very crazy first five minutes,” she recalled.
“It's a good thing to get past those few minutes, especially against a team like Haiti. And then in the second half, to score a lot of goals. Ther are a lot of positives that you can take out of the game today.”
Galic has been in fantastic form in Sweden, scoring seven goals this season in the Damallsvenskan and becoming a near ever-present starter for Vittsjö GIK.
“My club in Sweden have been so amazing,” she said,.
“I came in with low confidence, and they were so welcoming and really helped me find my confidence again and find my feet. We train at such a good, high intensity and a high level, and it's really brought out the best of me. All my teammates around me bring the best out of me as well. So, it's just been great so far.”
Her focus is now on continuing to impress ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™.
“It's definitely something I have in the back of my head,” she said.
“Thinking about the World Cup next year, I want to go into that playing my best. So, I’m hoping to build on these few games and the few games left of the [club] season.”
Her next opportunity in Australian colours, if selected, will come against Colombia next month.
