CommBank Matildas to close out 2024 in Victoria against Chinese Taipei

Football Australia has revealed that the CommBank Matildas will finish the 2024 FIFA Women’s International calendar in Victoria with a two-match series against Chinese Taipei in December.

Australia will host their AFC compatriots on Wednesday, 4 December 2024 (8.00pm AEDT) at AAMI Park in Melbourne before signing off for the year on Saturday, 7 December 2024 at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium (7.30pm AEDT)

AAMI Park will welcome back the CommBank Matildas for the first time since their pulsating FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ group stage match against Canada. While for GMHBA Stadium and Geelong it has been seven years since they have played hosts to the team, and they will feature in the final international of 2024.

Football Australia CEO, James Johnson, expressed his thanks to the Victorian Government for their partnership in bringing the national teams closer to Australian fans.

“To have the CommBank Matildas back in Victoria not long after they host the Subway Socceroos vital Round Three AFC Asian Qualifiers™ is only possible with the collaboration of the Victorian Government through their tourism and events company, Visit Victoria,” Johnson said.

“Victorians are equally as passionate about football at the grassroots level as they are in their support of our national teams as evidenced by their continual strong turnout for home games. Pleasingly the two-match series will also travel beyond the city to give fans who may not usually get the chance an opportunity to see their beloved CommBank Matildas.

“Playing in regional areas is important for us particularly with players like Kyra Cooney-Cross, Clare Hunt and Ellie Carpenter showing what is possible for kids playing the game from non-metropolitan centres to make it to the highest levels.

“The matches against Chinese Taipei are part of our strategy to prepare the CommBank Matildas for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ and central to that is consistent exposure to opponents from the AFC. We are looking forward to the fans starting to recreate that home support that will be a key as we commence the path to another home tournament,” Johnson concluded.

Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos said: "This is a major international sporting win for Victoria that will attract visitors from all over Australia and internationally – boosting local jobs and businesses and cementing our reputation as a global sporting destination."
